Re: SRT8 Grill on Non-SRT8 GCs... first try.

OK this may be a little bit of a repeat of the aforementioned but this is my experience in this modification....

It has been some time but I am finally getting around to commenting on the SRT8 Grille fit-up on a 2013 Laredo.

The Grilles come as an assembly. One of the pieces is the decorative cover (painted) which clips and unclips into/from the grille backing. The backing is what is bolted onto the front of your vehicle and what also gives you the honeycomb look behind the rings/holes in the grille (SRT8) or will give you the vertical lines look (Laredo), depending on which backing you are able to use. Some of the users on this forum have stated that their SRT8 Grille was simply plug and play and no modification was necessary, but that was not the case in my experience.

After taking off the front Fascia /Bumper and removing the stock Laredo Grille, bolting on the SRT8 Grille was simple and was very much so plug and play. But the problem is when trying to fit the Fascia/Bumper back on after bolting the SRT8 Grille down. It seems that the lower corners of the SRT8 Grille has an interference issue when trying to re-attach the fascia/bumper. The fascia/bumper simply does not snap back into place. So if you are going to use the SRT8 grille backing you would have to modify either the lower corners of the SRT8 Grille or you would have to modify the corresponding corners of the Fascia/Bumper where they fit into the grille.

I didn't want to modify my grille or my fascia/bumper, so the best way to make the SRT8 Grille work with my 2013 Laredo was to use the Laredo backing with the SRT8 decorative cover. Unsnapping the covers from their backings took a bit of force but they definitely are removable. But there is one small issue. The SRT8 Grill is shaped slightly different. It seems to be curved a bit more and sticks out on an angle slightly more, which results in not being able to fully clip the SRT8 decorative cover into the Laredo backing. The only 2 clips that fully engage are the very outer top clips. The rest fit in their appropriate locations but don't fully engage. This did not concern me as far as having the decorative cover stay put or worry me about it coming off at any point as the 2 clips that do engage hold it in place without any concern of it disengaging.

The only thing that I didn't like about using the SRT8 decorative cover and the Laredo backing combo was that since the bottom clips on the decorative cover didn't engage into the backing there was play between the decorative cover and the backing, meaning when you push on the grille it moved about 1" or so in. This bothered me as when I washed my car I was able to tell that the grille really didn't belong there.

My solution: Black Bumpers

20 ea 730" OD x 694 Long Push in Rubber Bumpers for 090" Max Thick Panel | eBay

I looked at the Grille in detail and noticed areas where bumpers/spacers would be able to be fit that would stop the movement/play between the decorative cover of the grille and the backing of the grille. I drilled 3/8" holes in their respective locations and forced the bumpers in. Once I was done I reattached the decorative cover to the backing and all the play between the cover and the backing was gone

Looks great KJPECHO !

Any chance you could post a few close-up pictures of how the grill corners line up with the bumper corners, after you added the rubbers? Putting a SRT grille in my 2012 Laredo is going to be one of my winterprojects too

Thanks!

I think the body lines match up pretty well.

I think the silver surround if the srt grill would have made it a better match. Instead, the full black made it look no different to the stock Chrome painted black. Personal preference I guess.

I agree, looks good. At least you confirmed for everyone that the SRT grille can be made to work on non-SRT Jeeps with some minor work. Thanks

I tend to agree with this too, and intend to paint the grille Mineral Gray, but keep the chrome trim to make it match the window trim, etc. I'm personally OK with "some" chrome/polished stainless, it's just that the whole grill, the rear brow and the door moldings are too much

Not yet. It is one of my winter projects. I'll post pictures when it's done, but it might be a few months... long winter in Ohio...
