Honestly for someone who enjoys cars as much as you do I think you would love the SRT wheel. When I ordered mine I was going on aesthetics alone and never even considered what it would feel like in your hands while driving and boy was I in for a surprise. The shape is fantastic to hold and the thickness of both the upper and lower portions of the wheel are just perfect. It pushes the already great interior of the WK2 into a whole other class - it now feels very Audi'esq behind the wheel and the interior feels even more refined.

Speaking of which what year S4 did you have? I had an 01.5 for a few years that I also really enjoyed. Great traction/handling and loads of power with a tune and some goodies. Unfortunatley it was also quite expensive to maintain so we ended up selling it.
Yes, I'm sure I would enjoy the wheel. I was just trying not to keep spending even more money modifying my vehicle(s). However, I do know that will never happen. If the manufacturers would just build them the correct way, I wouldn't have to. LOL. At least my wife saw my habit of doing that before we got married, so she knows that I cannot leave anything alone. When she found out that I already had the wheels and tires waiting at Discount Tire before my Jeep arrived at the dealer, she just gave me a bad time for it...

I had a 2004 S4 - it had the V8 so lots of power and an awesome custom exhaust. My wife liked the sound and had fun driving it too. However, not one, but BOTH cam adjusters stopped working. The quote from the dealer was $6000 to fix it. At the time, the car had about 74,000 miles and was worth about $18,000 to $20,000. I didn't want to spend 1/3 of the value of the car to fix it and have other things go wrong (like suspension replacement, etc.). I got it fixed for about $2100 and traded it for a 2005 Cayenne Turbo. It was a great car. I bought it right and sold it right - paid $20K in 2009, put 30,000 miles on it and sold it for $18K in 2011...

Just cause you've got an SRT steering wheel does not mean you have an SRT. LOL I think your next upgrade should be a Valentine 1 radar detector

Re: SRT8 Steering Wheel Installed

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this but the SRT steering wheel does not fit properly. I noticed when turning yesterday that the wheel was rubbing on turns. I took it back off and discovered that the back of the wheel is made of rubber. My stock wheel is plastic on the back. Because of this it bows out when installed and rubs. The problem is that when you put the bracket on from the old wheel that goes under the hex bolt it doesn't fit. There are tabs that hold the harness that run on the bottom inside the wheel which are made of rubber and large. Stock wheel does not have this. These rubber tabs that hold the harness stop the ring from fitting on there. You must cut those tabs off and install the ring then run the harness under the ring. Doing this made it fit perfect. So check your wheels fellas. You will see it bowing out at the bottom causing rubbing.

Yeah, you're not supposed to re-install the damper (metal bracket under hex bolt with weight attached) - this part is installed in the overland/limited/laredo wheels but is not used on the SRT wheel (confirmed by the parts department).

What is the damper used for?

My only guess is that it adds some weight to the other wheels to change steering feel. It is also supposed to reduce vibrations but I didn't notice any difference at all with it removed and the new wheel actually feels more solid than either the overland or limited wheels did.

Steering wheel damper

Ok makes sense. Sooo, all the models except the SRT8 have a steering damper that smooths out steering feel but for the SRT8 it does not have it so that you can feel the road better. So the choice is to not install it or modifly the wheel a bit to install it and have a smoother feeling wheel. Interesting. I would be interested to know who installed the damper and who didn't and get some feedback on both as to which is better.
