Re: SRT8 Steering Wheel Installed

I think the wheel looks awesome. For me, I don't have perforated leather anywhere, and I just don't like the SRT logo.

Some may think this is dumb, could it be recovered in leather like our wheels. It looks like it would cover up the logo since the leather covers this section on our wheels.

Re: SRT8 Steering Wheel Installed

Heads Up - SRT8 Steering Wheel Install Update:

Figured out why my cruise control did not function after SRT8 steering wheel install - despite best efforts I fawked up and unwound the clockspring. This also caused the traction control light to come on full time, which again, was caused by the clockspring getting unwound. Doing so makes the traction control and computer think that the vehicle is constantly going in circles, the balance and direction are pretty sensitive to proper clockspring tension.

Note this is a $750 cost to replace the clockspring as it cannot be repaired, so a costly error on my part.

I believe it was a hamfist move as during the install I first ended up turning the WK2 wheel fully to the left in an effort to lock the wheel to loosen the main hex mounting bolt. Instead, it would have been better to leave it centered and either put a steel broomstick handle through the wheel to brace against, or tie a looped strap through the wheel and stand on it to lock the steering wheel before breaking loose the hex bolt.

Lesson learned the hard way, thought to pass it on.

Despite this setback, this is still a hugely nice upgrade as you touch the steering wheel perhaps more often than any other part of the vehicle, and it obviously is critical to the driving experience.

Ouch- Someone has deep pockets. Glad you got it figured out. How did you come to the conclusion that was the issue, the dealership?

Re: SRT8 Steering Wheel Installed

Wow Moose, real sorry to hear that bad news... That one hurts!...

I really loved that SRT wheel & shifter knob upgrade that both you & 604 have done here!

I wanted to do it also, but when contacting that ebay wheel seller... he did not have any nor would get any more wheels to sell at that great 1/3 of the list price deal.

The look & feel from both your details & pics were very inviting...

Too bad you didn't break-out your buddy Mr. Rabbit Ears to help hold that old wheel for you!

That's brutal Moose, sorry to hear about the clockspring issue. I'll be sure to add a warning to the removal post as well. Like you said, it must have been the turning of the wheel that did it. On the bright side it sounds like your cruise control is fixed at least. Man, that sucks.

Re: SRT8 Steering Wheel Installed

^Thanks for the condolences gents, though it was my own boneheaded move. Jorde, I was getting nowhere troubleshooting the cruise control problem, and eventually stumbled on it during a google search that showed a connection betweem the clockspring, cruise, and traction control. I then threw in the towel and went limping into Jeep service with my tail between my legs, they diagnosed my stupidity in 30 seconds.

The service manager just smiles now cause he knows I suffer greatly from uncurable mod fever. At this point he's just a supportive enabler.

Re: SRT8 Steering Wheel Installed

Does anyone have the part number for this SRT8 wheel? I've looked around and so far haven't found an online site that has the 2012 parts in yet. Any pointers there would be helpful too. We're contemplating trading our Rubicon in on an Overland, but we don't do wood in our cars so I'd have to sort that out. This wheel looks to be the ticket. I'm curious what list price is on it. Thanks!

Re: SRT8 Steering Wheel Installed

JWA33,

SRT steering wheel part #1XT711X9AA.

Better sit down because it has an approx. $895. list price!!

In addition for an Overland, it will need the 2 back cover plates for the non-use shift paddles and were not available for sale yet a month or so ago.

Re: SRT8 Steering Wheel Installed

I also believe most people in this thread found them on ebay for around 300.

Re: SRT8 Steering Wheel Installed

That's right J.

But the ebay seller only had 2, maybe 3 wheels... (604, Moose, & ...)

When I contacted him for more availability, he said that was it & he was not getting anymore at anytime.

That was a GREAT deal at $300.!
