I was hoping to do a quick upgrade over stock bulbs for the headlights/fogs and after reading many different threads I decided to pull the trigger on some SYLVANIA H11 SilverStar zXe High Performance Halogen Headlight Bulb. I found them for $49.99 / 2-pack and had a coupon from Advanced Auto Parts to net each pack around $42.

First, the installation didn't take as long as I originally thought based on hearing some of the forum members experience. Unless I didn't know the trick, the driver side took longer because I had to remove the airbox. The airbox was the PITA over the actual bulb installation. Overall it took me about 40 minutes (1 hour with the airbox struggle I had). I took her out last night and did see a dramatic difference for road brightness and spread, at least in the low light area where I live.

Also, reading a handful of reviews online there was a concern that bulb life would be dramatically less due to the Jeep's DRL setting. At this time I have turned DRL off but I am going back/forth to truly understand how much life is taken from the bulbs and consider keeping DRL on.

Here's a link to a class action suit that was filed against Sylvania for making false claims about their Silverstar bulbs. I think the suit has already been settled though.

I've done a little research in my quest to find a light bulb that will help me see better at night. Here's what I have discovered. A new standard halogen bulb produces at or near the maximum light output (lumens) allowed by law. If a bulb is any brighter, it wouldn't be DOT approved and would be illegal to use on the road. Most of the manufacturers who claim their bulbs are brighter are comparing them to an old halogen bulb that only has 80% of the light output that it had when new. Halogen bulbs lose some brightness over time and replacing an old bulb with any new one is going to be an improvement.
