Thoughts on Dealer rust protection products?

Hi All,

Looking for input on rust protection. Dealer has option of exterior rust protection product and an underbody type option. Both are a coating of some sort and not an electronic device. Coverage sounds reasonable but not sure if its worth it vs aftermarket products such as Krown etc. I'm in the north so salt/sand is a significant factor.

Interested to know your thoughts.

Thanks

Some dealers push these as extra profit items with high margins.
Others don't bother or don't even offer them.

Opinions vary.
If I were to quit spray washing the underbody every week, I'd probably consider an aftermarket one...

Re: Thoughts on Dealer rust protection products?

I see your in Southern Ontario. I'm an ex Brampton man myself so I can appreciate first hand how much they love to spread the salt there in Ont.

Back in the day cars rusted out quicker then you could say body shop.

I didn't get my last 3 undercoated and never had an issue. My son drives my old 2002 Grand Prix GTP with close to 270K on it and not a speck of rust.

They do make high margins on the extras so if your a good negotiator and you think it's a good idea to have it, you should be able to get them to shave some money off it.

But cars are built much better now. Panels are dipped for rust protection. I have heard that people swear it makes the interior quieter?

Dealer rust proofing is at best a rip-off intended to separate the unknowing from their hard earned money [or trust fund]. It is egregiously overpriced and tends to be the so called sacrificial type that is easy to install but essentially worthless.

Ziebart is a traditional rust proofing, but there are newer technologies such as drip oil that can penetrate better and thus hit more places. None of them are as expensive as a typical dealer rust proof package. I don't know of any of these that don't require drilling, and installers would prefer you take the vehicle directly to them on delivery.

Are they needed, maybe, particularly if you intend to keep it for more than 5-6 years and don't religiously use a power washer underneath.

The old ZJ's came with pretty good protection, a 20 year old one had no rust despite being in the sierra "salt it up again folks" winters, but it was power washed with a curved wand once a week. The WK2 protection looks pretty good, possibly as effective as the old ZJ, but power washers cost less than rust proofing.

Re: Thoughts on Dealer rust protection products?

I've had a '96 Jeep Cherokee since new with over 300,000 miles in Nebraska. I've kept it looking new since it was. I know what rusts.

As long as you don't cut or make a nick through your zinc coating (under the paint), the vehicle will not rust. It is impacts, scratches and rub offs that wear through the coatings that protect your vehicle. I bought my new '14 JGC Limited with skid plates because my assumption is that they will add another layer of armour underneath to protect the more vulnerable panels.

The more vulnerable panels are any of them that are exposed to the ground or the chance for any rocks or objects to hit them and wear off the coatings. The vehicle will not rust if the coatings are kept intact.

The bottoms of doors are vulnerable since all the seams aren't always protected forever. Metal moves and this is a moving vehicle. on the Cherokee, I have been spraying WD-40 into the bottom of the doors prior to every car wash for years. No rust on mine.... and corrosion protection has come a long way since '96.

Re: Thoughts on Dealer rust protection products?

Speaking of Oil spray. I remember years ago my father in law used to take his 1975 Cutlass to “a guy” who sprayed the whole underside with recycled oil.

Then he’d take that car out on a gravel back road someplace and drive up and down that road for 20 minutes or so until all the oil was covered in dust.
Then off to the airport park it on the gravel near a fence lite up his pipe and spend an hour watching planes land. All the excess oil would drip out of all the cracks and crevasses .

The he’d head home happy as a lamb

He used to swear by it. Me…not so much

Other than the smell, you've just described the leading edge of aftermarket undercoating...except it ain't as cheap as recycled oil any more.
Check out Krown.

What no one has asked is, "How long will you keep this vehicle?" I live in Minnesota and am no stranger to salt on roads, in the vehicles, on the clothes, and everywhere else in the winter.

After 9 years of owning my 2003 Liberty it only had a little rust starting on the bottom inside edge of the front doors which was easily fixed by me and a little paint. I see no reason for you to spend your money unless you plan on keeping it more than 10 years.

Well hopefully at least 6-7 if the diesel holds up but hard to say past that.

Re: Thoughts on Dealer rust protection products?

For what it's worth, I have no plans for the rust protection for mine.
I am considering the extended warranty package though.
Mopar matts, splash guards and window / hood deflectors + some decent tires and we're set.
