Thule Aerobar wind noise?

Has anyone installed Thule 460Rs w/ Aeroblades yet? I installed mine a few weeks ago and have recently started hearing a high-pitched squeal/whistle at speeds of 55-60+. It's not very loud, but noticeable nonetheless.

I thought it was something else because the noise seemed pretty localized to the area in front of the passenger seat, so I had my dealership check it out when I took it in for oil change. They also thought it was something other than the roofrack, but when they removed the roofrack, they said the noise went away (so... assuming they were being truthful, it seems to be the roofrack).

Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on getting rid of this mildly-annoying whistle?

Re: Thule Aerobar wind noise?

Do you speak of the rapid Aero bar or the new aero blade? ARB47 or RB47?

Have you tried to remove the roof rack and verify for yourself? Its 8 screws if im not mistaken.

I posted this same question but questioning the new aeroblades because I am trying to upgrade from the aero bars to the aeroblade. The aero bars do whistle for me at speeds that you mention with no flairing.

Re: Thule Aerobar wind noise?

Yup! There is wind noise from my Aero Bars. The noise is no big deal, but sometimes, if the wind is right (or wrong) it can get loud.

Not enought noise to remove them when I don't have the Thule box on.

I have the Aeroblades... the second of your photos. And, no, I haven't removed yet to verify for myself. I will eventually... and will post if the noise is present without. I tend to doubt it, though... since I never heard that noise until I added the bars.

I currently have almost 23,000 miles.

Good to know. If you have time you should try removing them. I want to upgrade to aeroblades but would hate to have the same effect. However I bet the whistling you hear is probably lower then the aero bars I have. As others state it's not super bad but on highway trips it's there the whole time.

Re: Thule Aerobar wind noise?

I have the blades
I also hear the whistle occassionaly
Didn't hear the sound before so I don't think it's the jeep
Nothing terribly annoying, but i haven't taken her on a long road trip since installing them
We will see
Do you hAve one of their cargo box's? Mounting them to the blades is a bit interesting ...I assume a improvement is on the way...but it works

Re: Thule Aerobar wind noise?

I just upgraded from the aerobars to the aeroblades and I'm getting a high pitched whistle as well. Tried adjusting a few different ways. Bar spaced as far as they will go, bars space ~28" starting at front most position and same starting from rear most position. Tried with and without the cut to fit strips are in the bottom. Nothing seems to cure it. Its almost MORE annoying than the aero bars because although they were louder, they weren't nearly as high pitched.

As an interim measure, try wrapping a length of elastic cord or string two or three times around the bar along its length. That will break up any vortices emanating from the bars. However, the whistle may be coming from the fittings.

Re: Thule Aerobar wind noise?

I have the Aeroblades and no sound of any kind. Make sure you cut the under the bar ends trim to the exact lenght and make sure your rubber insert on top of the bar is well set and makes sure you close the bottom ruler trim cover fully.

Re: Thule Aerobar wind noise?

Do any of you guys have that wind deflector thing that goes in front of the bars? I get a bit a noise from my aero bars at highway speeds and am way too lazy to take them off.

Re: Thule Aerobar wind noise?

The wind fairing for the new aeroblades (pic #2) will not fit. According to Thule, they believe the shape of the new bars should've eliminated the need for the fairing. The fairing is reserved for the square bars and now discontinued aerobars.

I bought everything in one shot from EMS during their 20% off sale and discovered this first hand as i was attempting to install the fairing. It had to be returned and i put that money toward the yakima fatcat6 snowboard carrier. Wind noise is not too distracting especially since the only thing I really hear is my noise maker intake.
