Tinted License Plate Covers

I'm thinking about putting some lightly tinted plate covers on my 2016 High Altitude. Does anyone have any experience as far as reaction by local and State Police? RI and surrounding states would be the most helpful.
Thanks

Re: Tinted License Plate Covers

They're not approved in New Hampshire as the registration plates have to be completely visible.

Re: Tinted License Plate Covers

I think that's pretty true for most states. They don't like anything over the plates that would in any way make them harder to see.

Re: Tinted License Plate Covers

Confirmed for Ohio as well. Clear covers only.

Re: Tinted License Plate Covers

Thanks for the replies. I kinda figured that they were not quite legal, just wondering would they be really noticed and how much effort would be put into enforcement on an otherwise stock vehicle. Probably best to play it safe.

Re: Tinted License Plate Covers

FWIW, they're noticed more than you would think. The plates are looked at a lot by police. Even if they don't write you a ticket for that specific violation, you've handed them probable cause to stop you. If you're doing nothing else wrong, it's not big deal, you're delayed a few minutes and on your way. However, if there is anything else illegal going on, that could be the foot in the door that they need to find it.

I'm not trying to imply you're doing anything else wrong. Just saying that if you smoke anything "questionable", or if you had a few drinks at dinner, you're suspended, you or someone in the Jeep has a warrant, etc, that plate cover could land in bigger trouble. By "you" I mean anyone in any vehicle. Again, not trying to imply you specifically.

You are 100% correct on this. It's minor things like this that easily provide 90% of the probable causes for a stop.

I've had my on since 2012 here in NY. It all depends on what kind of cop pulls you over. I've been pulled over for it a few times and they've let me go Knock on wood!
