Re: Tow package after purchase

If the tow package was added at the factory, the dealer doesn't have to do anything. If the hitch receiver and wiring connectors were added by the dealer, they need to update the computer in the vehicle to turn on the wiring. Note...dealer installed means lower tow limits.

Thank you Jim, that's exactly what I needed to know!

Let us know how much your dealer charges for the flash. My dealer quoted me $125 for the flash. Claimed they need to verify everything is set up right. I'm calling BS. Haven't shopped around yet as I've been busy with other things. Will keep searching though but let us know.

Re: Tow package after purchase

I got mine flashed for free. I installed an aftermarket hitch and when I went in for my first oil change, I told the service people that the salesman told me they would activate the hitch wiring before I took delivery. Service manager apologized that it hadn't been done and took care of it at no charge.

Yeah, I told a little lie, but had I known the wiring would need to be activated, I would have made them do it before I bought the vehicle anyway.

Re: Tow package after purchase

why would a hitch installed later mean lower tow capacity? I made a lot of research and on the V6 model, the tow package comes with load leveling shocks, hitch, harness, full size spare, tow hook removal and thats ALL. The V6 already has the transmission cooler, and tow package doesnt include that. The only reason i would think adding a hitch later means lower tow capacity is because of the load leveling shocks. You can get that aftermarket i think... or install air bags. Maybe im wrong ?

I think it has to due with the load leveling shocks. You can buy them but from what I have seen that are hard to track down. So if you don't need the full capacity, it is probably not worth getting.

In my case, I don't anticipate pulling anything over 3k LBS so I am not installing the load leveling shocks. If that ever changes, I will look into getting the shocks as well as upgrading to HD brakes.

Largely because Jeep's specifications in writing state it's lower capacity. Physically, the Jeep might do the deed, but if you get into trouble with it, the specifications will come under consideration.

In addition to the load leveling shocks, I believe there may also be some difference in the sway bars for anti-sway improvements.

Re: Tow package after purchase

Each jeep no matter what, is rated at 5000lbs. Black on white

(a) All models can tow trailers up to 2,268 kilograms (5,000 pounds) with the addition of a trailer hitch. For towing heavier trailers up
to the Maximum Trailer Weight Ratings shown in the Trailer Towing chart, the vehicle must be equipped with the Trailer Tow
Group Class IV for the 5.7-litre engines for North America.

Im buying my second JGC now, and had a lonnnnng debate about it a the dealer. We had to include Chrysler Canada into the mixt. Im buying a Laredo X with no tow package. We are installing a hitch, wiring, air bag with compressor. factory warranty. The tow package on the V6 doesnt include a transmission cooler. The standard one already has one, and the tow package doesnt upgrade it. The Hemi might be different though.

the tow package includes the load leveling shocks. They need a different top mount, and also different springs. thats all there is to the tow package.

The Hemi has a special anti-sway software too on the towpackage. Not the V6

You know, I call bullsh*t on the reduce towing, at least with the V6.
The V6 doesn't have a trans cooler, and the only 'upgrades' I can find on mine with the factory tow package is the load leveling shocks and the full size spare (besides the actual hitch itself and the wiring).

So I say if you have the V6 and add the factory towing, you can still tow 5000lbs just as if it came from the factory.

AND...
The only difference I see between the 11-13 (5000lb) and the 14+ (6200lb) is the transmission (5spd vs 8spd) and the brakes (the 14+ models all have the same size brakes).

So if you install the V8 brakes on a V6 model, I don't see any reason why you couldn't safely go over the 5000lb limit.

But then again, I've been towing trailers since before I could legally drive, so....

Re: Tow package after purchase

I can only echo that Jeep says in writing in their specifications that the ratings are what they are. Is the vehicle capable of more? Likely. Would I personally exceed the stated ratings? Not knowingly because if there was an incident, it could put me in serious financial risk.

There does seem to be some discrepancy around what the limit is for JGCs without factory tow. Some versions of the manual say 3500 and some apparently say 5000.

Re: Tow package after purchase

My draw tite hitch rating is 5000. I don't think I may even reach that amount with what I tow but in any case if I ever wanted to I don't see why It wouldn't be capable of the 5k.

Idk.
