Re: Tow package after purchase

I had the dealer add the factory hitch to my 2014 JGC Limited at delivery. I pull a 4000 lb boat on a 1500 lb trailer an hour each way about 15 times a summer with no issues. I watch the temp gauges and oil will climb to 215 degrees in hilly terrain but transmission never goes over normal or 195 degrees. I have hydraulic brakes on the trailer and drive like an old man when I'm pulling the boat. I also use it to move an office trailer which weighs 5400 lbs and has electric brakes, again with no concerns. I did add the factory hitch because everything I could find aftermarket mounted up with 4 bolts and the factory hitch had eight, so that sounded better to me. And of course it looks factory. I don't detect that load leveling in the rear is needed......it sits nice and level with either one hooked up. That has to do with how balanced your trailer is and the tongue weight rather than the total trailer weight.

Re: Tow package after purchase

Yes I think that's all correct from the factory....so when I added the factory hitch all I got added was the receiver hitch and the 4 pin/7 pin sockets which were a separate part. The wiring harness was there from the factory actually even without the tow package. The dealer has to "flash" or activate it with the computer. Like some other posts here, my dealer didn't which caused me to have to make a return trip when I discovered the wiring had no power myself.

Every problem I have had with my GC has been caused by human error at the dealer, but that's another story for another time!

I don't have the heavy duty alternator or heavy duty engine cooling, therefore. That's why I check the coolant, oil and trans temps when towing. I didn't mention the coolant gauge earlier but it barely moves at all when towing. In fact, I've seen it go higher when stopped in traffic in 100 degree weather than when I am pulling the boat.

Re: Tow package after purchase

It's not about the hitch receiver, ssgunner. The OEM hitch receiver is "Class IV", but the rating for the vehicle with factory tow is way below the max for a Class IV hitch. (10,000 lbs for Class IV and the JGC is 4WD/7200 2WD/7400 with the Hemi or EcoDiesel) It's all about the vehicle here and what the manufacturer says is the limits. The JGC also has a rather sparse vehicle cargo capacity of which the tongue weight when towing comes out of, leaving less for passengers and luggage.
