Velcro not sticking to trim

I bought an Ultimate Pet Liner from cargoliner.com and it was delivered today. There are two types of velcro attachments, white and black. I followed the directions and cleaned the plastic trim where the velcro will attach with alcohol and waited 20 minutes. The velcro is not sticking to the trim. The directions say to use laquer thinner if that is the case. I'm hesitant because I don't make the black plastic fade. Any ideas if it will, or an alternative way to make it stick without causing permanent damage?

BTW - the liner appears to be extremely high quality. I was apprehensive to spend the money, $476, but think it will be worth it once I get the velcro to stick.

Re: Velcro not sticking to trim

Buy some 3M Automotive double stick tape like this:
===AUTO PAK ATTACHMENT TAPE

Walmart and Target usually have it in stock.

Stick the Velcro to the 3M stuff and then stick the 3M stuff to your trim.

I've used it to fasten a pewter gargoyle to pretty much all of my vehicles for the last 17 years (yes the same gargoyle, I move it from vehicle to vehicle as I get rid of them).

I've fastened it to rough and smooth dash surfaces over the years and it never moves except when I take it off.

Re: Velcro not sticking to trim

I'm probably going to have to give up on this cargo liner. It's too expensive ($476) to have not work.

I've cleaned the surface with alcohol and the green stuff. I've bought 3M molding tape as well as Scotch extreme outdoor tape. I've tried using the 3M adhesion promoter that was shipped with this darn thing. I cannot get the velcro to stick to sides of the cargo area. It's almost like Jeep built it with teflon in the plastic.

I'm not sure where to go from here. I need/want to protect the cargo area because of the dogs. If I don't do anything, the dogs will scratch up the plastic in short order.

Re: Velcro not sticking to trim

I had the same problem when I tried to attach a coin holder to the inside of the console on my '10 Ford Explorer. The adhesive that came with the item was useless, so I used some 3M double sided trim tape. Although I've had good success in other apps, the tape would not stick to the plastic trim. I finally had some success with a two part epoxy.

Re: Velcro not sticking to trim

I'm done with it. I went and bought a bottle of adhesion helper and it didn't work. All I have now is some light spots in the black plastic. It's boxed back up and going back on Monday. I'm going to do a CanvasBack or similar. I guess the sides will have to be unprotected.

Re: Velcro not sticking to trim

Did you try a different brand of adhesive backed Velcro?

No, but that is probably a good idea.
