Vinyl wrapped chrome window trim and mirrors

I thought I would try wrapping the chrome window trim and mirror covers in matte black after the good results of the CF interior trim project.
Once again it did not dissapoint! I am really happy with how it came out... a little less chrome but still stylish.

It took me a little while to figure out the mirror/mirror cap removal but once you get the first one off it's easier to understand what your in for with the second. The trim is also a bit tricky as I did not remove it from the Jeep but in the end it came out great. It definitly takes practice and patience and I had to redo a few pieces but I think I'm getting the hang of it now and could redo any one pice in about 10 min.

...

Next I need to get rid of those Michelins.

Looks great. I wonder what it would cost to get it done by a place locally.

Re: Vinyl wrapped chrome window trim and mirrors

Looks good, it should be one of the options similar to BMW. Chrome trim looks good, but there is a big demad for blacked out vehicles these days. Just look at the 100th Anniversary Corvette.....the bat mobile in my humble.

Re: Vinyl wrapped chrome window trim and mirrors

Damn, that looks incredible!!! Its weird how some of these little mods really make a difference. That entire window area and cheatline just look so good now.
I wish I knew what I wanted to do with my Mineral Grey Overland. There is just soo much chrome which IMO looks good, but if I start blacking some stuff out how far will it go? If I do the chrome around the windows, then will I have to do purchase body color matched door handles and mirror covers? It never ends :-)

Im looking at the Shadowline tint, but im not sure what would look best, gloss or matte? Any ideas?

Re: Vinyl wrapped chrome window trim and mirrors

Looks really good and I don't know how I missed this thread. I've been contemplating this as welll. I hope 604 checks this thread and can answer a few questions. I want matte black but wondered if it would clash with the gloss black that seperates the windows. Doesn't look like that's the case judging by the pic posted.

To 604, how did the vinyl wrap on the trim? The trim has the rubber gasket all around. Were you able to tuck the vinyl under the rubber or did you just cut it as close as possible?

E55 Bulldog is a name known to all
Re: Vinyl wrapped chrome window trim and mirrors

Looks great man. I have done this on one of my other cars and the it is a long process with a lot of patience needed. My other car had the chrome trip as one piece from the front mirror all the way along the top and wrapped around the back of the rear door. I think it was like a 6" strip. Didn't leave me much room for error.

Great job man. I bet it was a b*tch to get a good wrap under the mirror. I always have a hard time getting my fingers and the vinyl up under there.

Re: Vinyl wrapped chrome window trim and mirrors

Thanks for the comments guys and sorry for not responding sooner.

Like E55 said this is a VERY time consuming process. The corner under the mirror is a PITA and took multiple attempts, in the end I cut a single large piece (I had 2 whole yards of wrap, not just strips) and then slowly trimmed it back a bit at a time until I got the right shape etc to finish it off.

BUT...

After all that time spent I actually ended up removing the wrap because there were a couple spots where I slipped with the knife and you could just barely see the chrome underneath. 99% of people out there would have never noticed but my OCD got the better of me and I peeled it all off.

My honest recommendation would be that if you can afford it and don't care that its permanant that painting is the way to go on the window trim.

Otherwise if you have lots of free time (+/- 5 hours) and are VERY carefull not to cut the rubber seal as you trim the vinyl it is do-able.
