Warranty Voided due to aftermarket HID?

Took my car into the dealership for the transmission recall and an oil change and I was told that because I had installed an aftermarket HID on my '15 Limited, that my entire electrical system is no longer under warranty. Is this true? I'm not having any issues with my headlights or any electrical. Should I remove the HID?

Re: Warranty Voided due to aftermarket HID?

The law states the aftermarket part has to be directly responsible for any part failure. Since your aftermarket parts have caused no problems, it's a little premature for the dealer to start hollering denial of warranty. They would lose.

Governor, does the law vary by state? Where can I find more information on this? I'd like to do some research just in case anything happens.

The law in question is Federal. I actually learned about it in various posts on the forum. I did a Google search for you and found a pretty good read:
Warranty denied?

Get a new dealer, I tapped into the trailer wiring to activate the rear fog lights. The dealer hasn't said a thing.

Re: Warranty Voided due to aftermarket HID?

The dealer may not have said anything but, unfortunately, if you DO experience an electrical issue THEN that might cause problems with the warranty.

Here is a little info on Magnuson-Moss Act

Magnuson-Moss Act

the burden is on the manufacturer to prove aftermarket parts have caused an issue to invalidate a warranty. that said I think electrical issues can get sticky as interconnected as everything on vehicles are now. Could they get after you for your aftermarket HIDs potentially blowing a (TCM) transmission control module, probably not. Could they get after you for your aftermarket HIDs potentially blowing the (BCM)body control module that controls vehicle lighting, possibly. Chances are your aftermarket HIDs wont break anything. But if you blew a BCM for other reasons they could possibly make that guilt by association link. if it were me I wouldn't worry about it

Thanks for all of the info guys. Next time I'll just make sure I select the option with the HID lights.

Re: Warranty Voided due to aftermarket HID?

So how exactly does FCA prove your wires screwed up the Jeep's electrical component? It's not complicated, where they have to prove what system caused what to fail. If your after market wire draws a current, then game over. All it takes to prove in court is a picture of your aftermarket wires plugged into the Jeeps electrical system. They won't need more proof than that.

Magnuson-Moss act had one purpose; To keep manufacturers from fraudulently denying warranty claims for frivolous reasons (like: guy adds aftermarket wheels, so denied engine claim, etc).

If OP is worried that they did in fact record the aftermarket alteration (took pictures, etc), then he needs to go back to dealer with wires removed (back to stock), have the whole system tested (maybe pay $100 diagnostic fee) and then ask nicely to have FCA record the fact that all electrical systems work great. Then they won't be able to deny electrics claim in future.

It just seems odd that they have done this without anything going wrong in the first place. It's not like he went in there to get an electrical problem diagnosed and repaired. I'd get a legal representative.
