What is the cloth strip that pops up when the moonroof is open?

When you open the moonroof, there's a cloth strip that pops up at the front like a tiny tennis net. What is this for?

The WJ didn't have this, and on the WK2, it interferes with visibility through the moonroof. Does it serve any critical purpose? Is there any reason it can't be removed?

Is that really what it's for? That thought had crossed my mind, but sort of as a joke.

The WJ didn't have that - although there was a plastic section that moved up slightly - and I don't recall ever having a problem with bugs flying into the car.

Re: What is the cloth strip that pops up when the moonroof is open?

no no j/k yeah its a wind deflector to minimize the ear buffeting sensation but IMHO you still need to either crack a window or close the roof panel about .5-1" to remove all buffeting.

Aha. Okay, so as far as you know, it wouldn't cause any problems if I removed it?

uh, opposite....do yourself a favor and before you tear into it go for a spin at highway speeds with the roof open and you holding that deflector down...evaluate it's impact on buffeting noise for yourself.

Re: What is the cloth strip that pops up when the moonroof is open?

Yeah just like goplzgo said, it's a wind deflector and most if not all sunroof equipped cars have them...even your WJ did, but a less significant one. Like he said, go for a cruise and pull it down...you'll see what it does if you have the other windows up, depending on the situation it will give you sometimes heavy interior buffeting.

You really don't want to remove it...the noise becomes, um..."exceptional"...

That's unfortunate. I was fine in the WJ, and that didn't impede my view through the moonroof the way the net does in the WK2.

That deflector sucks compared to a traditional metal piece as I still get buffeting unless I crack a window.

I switched to the close the sunroof about
.5-1" way to kill the buffeting.
