Re: What's the verdict on LED headlight bulbs vs. HID?

I own a set of the XenonDepot Xtreme LED fogs for over a year now and not one single problem. Excellent product and may upgrade to the new versions!!!

@jdebler Where do you recommend mounting the XenonDepot control box and the canbus box?

Did you leave the direction of the LEDs horizontal meaning the XD logo on the front tip of the bulb is upright and each led faces to the right and left instead of up and down?

I took the plunge and decided to poke around in there today because I also had an amber front side marker out. Those are easily accessible through the fender liner porthole but for the low beam man it's tight going through that access.

I am going to have a buddy help me tomorrow with the low beam install.

@walle1jm - The ideal position is for the diodes to be facing 3 and 9 o'clock.

Thanks Steve - I will do that.

I assume each control box has to be double sided tape mounted somewhere? I assume they get hot so do they have to be affixed to metal?

Hi

We do include tie-straps which you can use as well. None of the components get super hot, so they don't necessarily need to be affixed to metal.

I mounted the controller box on a vertical part of what I believe is the radiator support. I got some 3M Dual Lock velcro to fasten it to it.

And if it helps...

I posted this before but here is it again but with more clarification. I am going by memory here...I will be doing it again in the near future so if there are clarifications I need to make, let me know.

You need a small Phillips screwdriver, a body panel remover tool (although a flat screwdriver will do in a pinch) and a 10mm socket. It also helps a ton if you have a forehead mounted flashlight. You will likely need both hands to work.
  1. Turn the front wheel all the way to one side or the other to give you room to work when you do this. I believe if you are working on the driver side, turn it all the way to the right, and all the way to the left when working on the passenger side.
  2. Unfasten the front half of inner fabric splash guard screws and bolts (and one twist-lock fastener).
  3. Gently bend the splash guard back. It is flexible enough to not do any damage when bending it. I used the tread of the front tire to hold it in place.
  4. Lay down under the front bumper and you can reach all the way up to behind the headlight.
  5. Remove and replace as needed.

Trust me, it will be MUCH easier that trying to use the useless little port hole and only takes a few minutes.

Re: What's the verdict on LED headlight bulbs vs. HID?

Thanks all. I was able to successfully install this morning.

With the help of a friend to have to sets of hands we were able to install both sides without removing fender liners, the air box, or the fluid reservoir.

I double sided tape mounted each box to metal reinforcements on the inner sides of each fender.

They look super bright in the daylight but the true test will be in the evening.

Thumbs up Re: What's the verdict on LED headlight bulbs vs. HID?

Okay guys! Here's the promised details of the new version of the XenonDepot Xtreme LED kit.

In case you missed it, I did a review of the previous version of XenonDepot's LED light bulbs (they aren't really "bulbs" any more are they?) in post #189 of this thread. They were the best I had tested up to that point, and they performed awesomely from day one...but there was a bit of scattering in my particular application. Did the new version fix this? it appears so! Read on...

First thing's first...this was really hard to take pics and video of effectively. I just don't think my camera can handle it well but I did my best.

Video showing physical differences between previous version and new version...

And now here's the pics...

NOTES:
  • Note that the NEW version is on the left, and the older version is on the right.
  • I did adjust the exposure on some of the pics a little bit so you can see the details.
  • I may need to adjust my driver side headlight aim...but it might actually help show the difference.

Both headlights on. Note that the new version (left) has a more concentrated/less scattered focus. Also note the slight color difference.

New ONLY

Previous version ONLY

New on the left, old on the right with the JWspeaker driving lights on. This combination, IMO is awesome.

Verdict?
These are definitely an improvement over the previous version...which were already better than stock halogens. If you have the 1st version, the 2nd ones have a better focus and better construction. Again, this is in my 2012 Jeep WK2 with stock halogen light housings.

Now I need to install the new version on the right side and re-aim them and I will be good to go!

Thanks for continuing to put out great products, Xenon Depot!

Re: What's the verdict on LED headlight bulbs vs. HID?

The beam pattern seems a bit scattered. Does it blind incoming drivers?
