Re: What's the verdict on LED headlight bulbs vs. HID?

Thanks Jdebler on testing these out! I've been on the fence in which ones to replace my std halogen and nervous I won't be happy with look or light output.

Can't wait to see the results!

Re: What's the verdict on LED headlight bulbs vs. HID?

Thanks for all the great info on the LED headlight/fog light conversions, I have a 2012 Laredo X with Halogen headlights, want to do the LED headlight swap on
low beams and high beams, fog lights as well. I live in Canada, it is law here to have day time running lights, the Jeep uses the high beam headlights at half voltage for DRL lights (run at 6 Volts, !2 volts applied when high beams on)
Has anyone tried the LED in high beams with DRL? and do they still function? When in the DRL mode at 6 volts

No problems other than the flickering...but it is very very minor and not always noticeable but the company sent me another ballast, two CANBUS adapters (which are typically used for HID flicker issues...which I think will fix it) and to be cool about it, also sent me a couple of what looks to be LED T10 bulbs for my use elsewhere. I am sure I can find a use for them.

So I got curious and got an infrared thermometer. Turned my lights on and waited 5 minutes for them to heat up. Interesting results.

At the hottest point of the headlight assembly I could find externally, the headlights are 99.5 degrees f right around there area where the hood meets the headlight capsule.

To compare, I also checked my JWSpeaker fog lights (which do not have a fan). The temp of those was 115.5 degrees f.

So the fans seems to work. But my curiosity never ends...

I also ordered a set of the fanless versions that scostuart mentioned earlier in this thread. This weekend I am going to install one and do a night comparison. I will also do a temperature comparison so see if the heat sink is as effective as they say. I am also going to do a more accurate "outside the housing" comparison with all three versions (incandescent, fan version, fanless version) to more accurate. I will report back what I find.

As mentioned before in this thread, I previously ordered a couple of sets of connectors to solder in for the new fanless version. Turns out I didn't need to...the kits I received had the right connector already. They must have changed this in production.

Stay tuned, I hope to get to them testing this weekend!

So that would make these a true plug and play then with no soldering required?

I dunno about that one. We have DRL's here in the states, but I am not sure if they cut the voltage to make them happen. Someone else may be able to chime in for clarity.

It appears to be in the situation that I have.

Re: What's the verdict on LED headlight bulbs vs. HID?

That would make these much more appealing if that's the case, you ordered them on ebay, the same link that was posted in this thread? Thinking about pulling the trigger if the light output is decent and color looks nice.

Re: What's the verdict on LED headlight bulbs vs. HID?

Sorry, all. Haven't been able to get to testing the fanless versions. Been way busy with some other things...but it is on my list. I'll post updates ASAP!

Re: What's the verdict on LED headlight bulbs vs. HID?

i went ahead and did install LED headlights in my high beams and low beams, the LED lights do work on daytime running lights, i do notice some minor flicker when on DRL mode,
once on high beam no flicker, think it is the low voltage to DRLS (6 volts), so far I have been very impressed with the lights, very bright, hope this helps you, now have LED fog lights on order

Could you post up what ones you installed? And do you have any pics of the design of the light itself? There are so many, would be interested in seeing what kind you have.
Thank you

Re: What's the verdict on LED headlight bulbs vs. HID?

I managed to crawl back under for the umpteenth time (WTF is "umpteenth" anyway?) last night to replace one of the fan versions with one of the fanless versions.

Before I did, I took some quick temperature readings, leaving them on for 5 minutes uncoupled from the headlamp housing in 60 degree outside temperature.

Fan version - the fan area and heat sink hardly got warm (110 degrees). The ballast did get very warm along with the LED housing that contains the LED elements also got very warm.

No fan version - Got a touch warmer than the fan version (113 degrees), but only by a few degrees.

OEM Incandescent bulb - got a little bit hotter than the no fan version (116 degrees).

Keep in mind, these are hardly scientific research. Just have an infrared thermometer gun from Harbor Freight and I try to find the hottest point.

So I installed the no fan version on the driver side, kept the fan version in the passenger side.

At first glance, the no fan version seems not quite as bright but I also think I need to re-aim the headlight. I also thought I saw a flicker but I also have to confirm that in total darkness. I plan to do more testing tonight and I will report back along with the temp readings.
