Question What's the verdict on LED headlight bulbs vs. HID?

I was at the SEMA show last November and I saw companies offering a lot of LED replacement headlight bulbs (for my halogen application, it would be an H11 bulb).

I have done a lot of reading about the pros and cons of LED vs. HID, but I don't see too many actually making the swap on a WK2, which kind of surprises me.

What's everyone think of the concept? A kit is around $100 or so, depending on where you looks and I physically handled some at SEMA that were apparently of decent quality.

Re: What's the verdict on LED headlight bulbs vs. HID?

I've read some other brand forums with guys that have tried the bulbs and the opinions seem to be split. Some people seem to like them and others state that while they are bright up close, they just don't have the 'throw' that the OEM halogen lights have.

If I had $100 to play with I might consider trying them, but other plans demand I stick with the halogen lights for now.

The stock halogen H11 puts out 1350 Lumens have you seen an LED H11 that puts out at least that many Lumens? All I have seen put out less than half of that and are nice if all you want is a color match to the HID headlights but throw very little usable light to see with on the road. There is a lot of cheap china junk on ebay with grand claims but I have not seen any reputable names that provide at least the 1350 Lumen output. Be interested if you find any that do at a reasonable price.

Re: What's the verdict on LED headlight bulbs vs. HID?

Thanks for the numbers, good to have for a more accurate comparison.

I have see claims of 1800 and 2200 LM out of them. But...that is just the stated claim.

I might consider trying them out if I can return them in case they suck, etc.

yeah definitely be careful of the ebay china junk I have seen different vendors selling the same bulbs one claiming 600 Lumens and the other 1600 Lumens. I have been looking around also like you for a while but have not found any reputable one that will meet or beat the 1350LM. Reasonable price also I am not paying $200 for a bulb If you find anything good out there let me know, this led technology changes and improves quickly so one will eventually be out there its just a mater of time but until then I am sticking with the halogens

Re: What's the verdict on LED headlight bulbs vs. HID?

Here's a well regarded top vendor selling H11 leds with a 2000 lumen claim. I have them in my fogs and they throw out a lot of light. Out of stock at the moment but they usually resupply pretty quickly I've found.

Nice find I like that they are selling them as a "headlight" replacement not just fog light or day runner which is tell tale sign of not throwing enough light. So how is the color match do they match the factory HID well?
Looks like there is a large module to mount somewhere where did you put that? Is that everything that you need in that box for plug and play? no extra load resistors needed or CANBUS errors or anything right? little pricey but not bad best I have seen if they throw the advertised lumens

The color match is perfect for OEM HIDs, these are 5000k. The ballast box I just double side taped to the fender wall, it's plug and play. I have them in my fog lights and they work without needing any resistors to simulate a higher load but I don't know if my fogs are tied into the CAN bus.

I'd be interested in something like that for my fogs, if they only had a 3000k yellow....

Re: What's the verdict on LED headlight bulbs vs. HID?

If I were to get a set to try out, what kind of tests should I run?

Color, cutoff, throw distance?

Leave one halogen in and put one LED in cover the headlights and shine the fogs against a wall somewhere and compare the two. Its not an exacting type of test but it will give you an idea if they are throwing round about as much as the halogens. Don't just stand in front of your jeep and look at them they will look bright from that perspective no matter what you have in there.

I emailed VLED and asked them about the new next generation ones they are working on and when they would be ready. They said not for another 6-8 months they are still in the concept phase. So the ones vertrkr has listed above are probably the best choice for a while.
