Re: Whiter fog lights

Okay, here's the deal on what I am looking for...maybe this will help.

I recently installed Sylvania Silverstar ZXE bulbs until someone comes out with an aftermarket Halo/Projector capsule. The bulbs are decent, and put out a nice white light. So far, so good.

The fogs, however, are that stock dreary yellow. Blech.

So the reason I found and posted in this thread is because I am looking for the right bulb to put in my fog light housings that put out a white light (like what the OP posted about) and hopefully that has an OEM fit or can be easily modified to fit securely like OEM. Where to look?

I just spoke with KBcarstuff, they say it's a direct replacement and no modification needed. I guess I'll report back once I get them.

Re: Whiter fog lights

I purchased those exact Putco Ion Spark white bulbs and installed into my wk2. It is direct replacement. The only difference they have is that the tab to release the bulbs are in the same spot as the tab that you disconnect it's plug-in connector. When you install the Ion Spark bulbs, the tab will give you an idea where you need to push the bulbs into the housing, since it's in the same spot as the tab you use to pull the plug connector.

Taking pictures is hard since there is really no room to do so. You need to remove a screw knob that secures a shield closest to the wheel. Twist and pull it out, lift the shield a bit to give you some wiggle room, there is already a cut out hole that gives you room without undoing the knob, but doing so will give you more room to work with, then reach your hand in there (hopefully you don't have giant hands like mine) pull the plug connector by pressing down on the tab. Disconnect the plug then squeeze the two tabs on the fog light bulb and pull straight out. Try and remember with your fingers how the tabs were positioned so when you put in the Putco ones, you wont have to guess. Mine were angled diagonally. Since the tab on the new one is directly under the tab that secures the bulbs to the car, it was confusing to know if it was in there secure. Just make sure you here it click or snap into place, wiggle it to see if jiggles, if it does too much you don't have it in all the way.... getting the plug connector in after that is a job because when you feel with your fingers for the tab, you will get confused since it is right under the tabs that secure the bulb to the housing. If this is confusing I'm sorry just read carefully and do it at the same time, it is easier than it reads lol. I'll go take some quick pics right now....

Re: Whiter fog lights

I don't understand why some are having to file off tabs on the Putcos and some say they fit w/ no modification necessary. I have tried w/ the tabs left on the plastic body and they definitely do not fit. With the 3 tabs on the plastic body ground down, they fit, but are really loose in the OEM socket and the light bounces around. I have spent a while trying the Putco bulbs in all orientations and can not get them to snap in and stay securely. I find it disheartening that I have re-built transmissions, built custom suspensions, but can not snap in a set of freakin' fog light bulbs. Are you sure you guys getting the Putco bulbs to snap in don't have any bounce to the light when driving down the road? I just find this unbelievable...

Re: Whiter fog lights

The guy from KB carstuff put me on hold (chat) and went and compared the bulbs side by side with a "technician". They swear they are exactly the same bulb. I couldn't cancel my order (shipped) so I will give it a try once I get them, hopefully by the weekend. I will def return them if they fit lose, I don't want the lense to get fogged up with condensation if it's not sealed properly.

Please do and post some pictures compared to stock if you can. The Putcos I ordered are 230001JY (Jet Yellow) and they are definitely different when compared to stock.
