Why I hate bug deflectors

So my jeep had the bug defector on it when I bought. Well I wasn't a fan of the look so I decided to take it off.

Well was I ever upset my hood has 5 marks from the brackets rusting and rubbing on the hood.

Due to the xxx idiot who didn't put felt under the brackets!!

So a tip for anyone deciding to install one use some sort of felt on the brackets otherwise be prepared for your hood to be marked.

They where extremely bad. Even after a rubbing compound and wet sand the marks are embedded into the paint. This is before the wet sand. They are faded now but I still notice them which bothers me every time I look at it.

Yeah, that's really anoying...If you are not going to repaint, you could try and use a vynle decal strip that would cover the hole base of the hood...say 2inches. What color is the Jeep?

Re: Why I hate bug deflectors

It's granite. I am going to bring it to one place that does airbrush touch ups and see what they say.

You will be more upset when you start get dings and rock chips on that part of the hood. That aluminum hood is so weak it will get dinged if you sneeze too hard next to it.

On my Altitude I installed a clear bra which so far is doing its job.

My biggest pet peeve with my Jeep is the hood made of butter.

I tried a clear bra. Installer did not do a good job. Left bubbles and crap under the bra. On closer inspection also had light cutmarks on edges of the protector when I pulled up an edge. Was worried how bad the damage was so wanted it removed. Did not want them to touch it again. Confronted installer and was told if I removed it myself it would pull the paint off. Called dealership body shop who laughed at what they told me. Five foot tall female me tore that crap off my jeep in his parking lot, wadded it up and took it in and demanded my money back ($1100). Asked installer BEFORE it was done if there would be ANY marks when removed. Of course he said no. Only reason I got my money back was because of all the marks on EVERY edge of the protector. They told me they could have fixed the bra from my original fit/finish appearance concerns (before I discovered the scratches). SURE. Add a few more scratches. HELL no... Who could in all conscience do that to someone's beautiful brand new Jeep.

Dealership quoted me $300 to buff out all the marks. Hesitant to let anyone touch it so the marks are still there. It is the worst around the Jeep emblem on my hood and the upper edge of the hood. What a waste of time and effort just to get little cut marks all over my jeep.

Just be careful if you get a clear bra...

So am contemplating a bug deflector but will make sure it is installed right and doesn't rub.

Re: Why I hate bug deflectors

Do the bug deflectors actually work? I'm new to the JK, but never had them on my XJ or WJ. The Physics of the JK windshield seem to get a lot more bug impact than my other jeeps did.

Re: Why I hate bug deflectors

I honestly didn't mind the look of it but I would rather not have it on, if you do install it just make sure they have felt or something underneath the metal brackets which will rust.

Mine was the OEM mopar one Tinted Black.
