It's great they're willing to work on this, keep us posted.
From what I have seen... This will not impact the approach angle at all - it will not increase the length, etc. It would add some weight, but with the spacer lift, it shouldn't impact the approach angle over stock.

Re: Winch Mount and bumper

So here is what I know so far:

The "base" installation will be a winch mount. Stealth style - hidden up in the bumper. You would only see the fairlead and hook coming through it.

The base replaces the factory cross member with one stronger than factory, and with the ability to hold a winch. The mount was designed around a smittybilt XRC10. It should work with any winch with those basic same dimensions, but will have to have a non-integrated selenoid, so it can be mounted away from the winch.

The next level up would include a bumper cover - it will attach directly to the winch mount through the plastic bumper to give added strength. The design looks really sharp, and blends well into the lines of the jeep. There will be a base bumper, with options for an upper bar (with or without light tabs), as well as d-rings. Since Rocky Road builds most of this stuff to order, you will have all 3 choices.

This may or may not work with the Adaptive Cruise Control - the sensor sits right where the winch is sitting. RRO may be able to build a different mount for the sensor, but I don't have ACC on my jeep for them to try it out. Future unknown.

Depending on personal choice - there will also potentially be some cutting of the plastic grill, so you can plug in the wired remote, and reach in to engage/free spool the clutch. However, this isn't needed, depending on your utilization (i.e. using a wireless winch control, and using your winch to spool out the line, rather than disengaging the clutch). That will all be part of your choice on the installation - how custom you want to go...

The installation will be relatively easy and straight forward - remove the bumper, unbolt the factory cross member, mount the winch to the new cross member, bolt in the mount to the frame, mark and cut the bumper cover, reinstall..... I am way over-simplifying the steps, but it won't be anywhere near as complicated as custom fab work or anything. Basic bolt on parts and upgrades!

Hit me with any questions - it is supposed to be done this week, and I will be taking lots of pictures once it is on. RRO hopes to have these completed and to market in the next couple or three weeks.

One thing to remember - they are not a mass-manufacture shop - each part is hand made, hand prepped, powder-coated, etc. They don't crank out millions of the same part, and it shows in their build quality and overall strength. They also don't have hundreds of a part sitting on a shelf waiting to be ordered. It may take a little longer to get the parts from them, but you know you had one built just for you.....

Re: Winch Mount and bumper

I don't think pricing is anywhere near complete, since they are still designing it.

Once they have it speced, built, and the templates made, they can go through the exercise of what all the pieces cost to build....

+1 for the thread

It'd be really nice to get re-designed crossmember with winch mount on it.

Re: Winch Mount and bumper

I'd definitely be interested in this. Bolt on sounds great. I just ordered my 2.5" lift from RR so hopefully will be getting stuck soon and needing a winch!

By the way, their customer service was excellent - answered numerous questions via email very quickly, and shipped the lift out 2 days after order went through. Very pleased so far.

Re: Winch Mount and bumper

So - I chatted with them yesterday, and based on some design decisions (and employee vacation schedules), it won't be ready until next week.... There were a couple things that came up as they were designing that stalled a bit.

The option for d-rings is being taken off the table - when they looked at the amount of metal and the design to make it strong enough to make it a recovery point, it stopped making sense. It wouldn't have enough lateral strength if you were to recover on the d-rings anything more than dead-on straight.

They also figured out some additional lighting options, and we have been going back and forth on types of lights (LED, HID, standard 4/5/6 inch, square, etc....) All will probably look good - but trying to make the light mounts universal enough to do anything. It looks like a 18 or 20 inch LED light bar will fit (that is what I am thinking of doing)

So - still REALLY soon - I plan to have it next week, so I can run down to Jeep Safari the following week!

Re: Winch Mount and bumper

Teaser Pic - Here is the first option - hidden winch mount with just the Fairlead showing (don't mind the holes from my licence plate). Rocky Road is killing it - sexy as hell....

More pics with the bumper on there this weekend...
