The clear film blocks up to 65% of the heat. It tends to get a bit warm here in Dubai.

I know this link is for the residential use films, but the same applies to their automotive products.

Re: Window tinting?

Has anyone tried 35% to match the front? I had 20% on my '00 and seems darker than what is stock rear on the '11. I had 35% on an older car that I felt was sort of light, my biggest concern is to match the rears. I know many of you say that 20 is the best match but has anyone used 35% and can provide a pic? Thanks.

As far as tint %s I am have to agree with jonnyg, 15% is a correct match regardless of whether you tint the windshield or not.
The rear windows are tinted at 19%. I used a tint meter to get the exact reading. Going with 20% on the front will give you a better match then 15. The reason being that the front windows, unlike the rear, are safety glass. They have 2 pieces or glass together with a plastic film in the middle. That film adds some darkness to the window already. It may not be visible to the eye, but when a meter is used, it affects the reading.

Re: Window tinting?

I live in Virginia and they are pretty strict on tint laws. Requires 50% front sides and 35% rear! Previously, I lived in Florida (much more forgiving). Would a cop REALLY fine me for the rear windows being too dark from the factory?!? I want to chance it and get the front sides tinted 20% anyway, but I am curious if anyone has ever been fined for stock rear window tint.

I have the 3M Film, which comes in 35% (darkest legal in MD), 20% & 5%. I went with 20%, looks great, perfect match and when I roll back the sunshade enough light comes through incase I get stopped (ticketable offense in MD and consodering I am checked into work by MPs each morning thats a good thing). Cost = $129+tax.

Windshield is not tinted (illegal in MD) but I do have a 7" inch visor strip that is 5%. Cost = Free (I had a coupon from the internet)

I didn't spring for the clear 3M bra (its on the wife's R350 - $800 for 24" onto hood, didn't price out he JGC) as I am rarely on the highway, mostly country roads for me. But I did get clear 3M inserts inside the door handles. Cost = $20 for all four.

I'd post pics but I don't have any and its too dark when I leave work. Maybe this weekend.

Mhassler,

I'm not far from you in Mont. Co. and want to get 20% too. Just for clarity since 35% is the darkest legal in MD, isn't 20% illegal since the % is the amount of light allowed to pass through the glass. Just making sure I understand what the % means and don't have it backwards. If I understand correctly is sounds like the WK2 tint is illegal in MD from the factory. This won't stop me from tinting just curious .

Re: Window tinting?

Live in Cali, rules are strict here so I decided to play it safe with my tint. Went with 55% Suntech tint even though matching it looks great. Talked to the tint guy, he said if I want to risk it I can try 45% but will probably be pulled over within a year.

Anyway thought I would forward picks for anyone that might just want a little tint.

From the front looking back it looks great, but from the side or the back it is nowhere near as cool as 20% :-) Paid $85

Re: Window tinting?

I always thought tint % laws only applied to side windows and windshields (typically no tint allowed for windshields... in CA). and not for rear windows.

Anyway... I believe legal tint in CA is any tint allowed for rear windows. No tint allowed for windshield. and must have above 70% light transmission for front windows.
70% light transmission is basically super super light tint. So basically if you want to tint your front windows in CA it's going to be "illegal." Will you get caught? Depends how you drive and how the officers are feeling that day.

IMO, 35% would be the lightest I would go on the front. Most likely I will go with 20% to match the rear.

I had 15% all around on my black A4. Looked sweet. Got 2 tint tickets in 3 years.

PS, Headshock:
Was it tough to put that Thule fairing on? I basically have the same rack setup as you, minus the fairing. Do you see a big difference in wind noise?
