Good to know, gotta think about it. Just last week I got a $130 ticket for holding a cell phone in my right hand while waiting in traffic in NYC, they just look for reasons to nickel and dime...

It's cause they don't like New Jersey'ns. You know there is a no tolerance cellphone law there.

Just making sure I understand what the % means and don't have it backwards. If I understand correctly is sounds like the WK2 tint is illegal in MD from the factory. This won't stop me from tinting just curious .
its confusing to say the least... MD Law, for SUVs is 35% tint (65% light emitted) on the front two windows. Passenger windows and behind, to include rear hatch is 5% (aka limo tint). Tinting the windshield is illegal, period.

Here is why it is tricky, our windows, and may others nowadays, come from the factory with a very minor tint, say 2-5%, on the front and darker in the rear - such is the case with the Wk2. This means that when a 35% window film is applied over top of it, you are really blocking closer to 40% of the light thereby making your tint illegal. Here is a better explanation: http://www.berwynheightspd.com/tinted%20windows.htm.

3M brand tint comes in 50%, 35%, 20% and 5% so unless you get 50% you are "breaking the law". So, in my mind if I am going to have illegal tint I'd rather have it match

Also, there was earlier discussion on how "horrible" my visor looked. So I got that "fixed" for now. Apparently they used a silver film on purpose so the tint would adhere to the baked enamel dot matrix pattern, that's why it looks silver. I had them cut it off. Now, there is no tint there but it is not as noticeable, I need to get the entire piece re-done.

Attached is an action shot of the removal and an after picture.

Re: Window tinting?

As summer is coming (not here is South East AZ today) and people start looking at tinting their WK2 I thought I would post a good link that provides good information about each of the states laws on window tint. I live in a small town and the police here just love to ticket people for excessive window tint.

If you travel widely out of state, you need to go with the worst-case situation. We found out about this the hard way in DC, when we stopped to read a map and got snared in a drug sting. The police couldn't find anything illegal about us, but pored over the window tinting in detail until they were satisfied it met legal standards. (And confiscated our radar detector!)

Re: Window tinting?

I use Llumar Pinnacool series for my front windshield. It's very lightly tinted and legal. Works fine with detectors and auto highbims.

Just had my front windows tinted to match all the others. $65 cash deal and they look great! Will help keep cool during the ridiculous Texas summer

Thanks for posting that! Just read through the whole thread. I've been wondering about this for awhile now. Looks like the best bet is to just have them cut around the dot matrix. So annoying! Just leave that off and let people add their own tint strips or tint it from the factory.

Haven't seen anyone post pics of a vinyl solution for the dot matrix. My tinter was suggesting that as well but we never went anywhere with it.

Re: Window tinting?

I went with 35% on the front windows (not windshield) and 35% over the factory tint. Should have gone 20% in the front for a better match, but at least I'm "legal".

Re: Window tinting?

Here is what 20% 3M tint looks like on a silver Jeep (front windows) with Wind deflectors by weather-tech.

Re: Window tinting?

My local tint place wants $89 plus tax for the two front side windows?

He uses LLumar Formula One, decent price?

I paid $90 + tax for the front 2 windows...Suntek CXP18, which is Suntek's top of the line film, so that price sounds about right if that is one of Llumar's top of the line films, but I am not familiar with their different films.
