Re: Window vents Yes/No

Here is a Summit for sale in Portland that has window vents. With the grey paint the vents don't stand out as much, but still prefer the look without them.

Ah yes, I remember the days of the front floor vents and the triangular window vents (of course all manual).

Before A/C was common (and relatively inexpensive) that was the ONLY way to cool a vehicle, but even that sucked if you got caught outside in a downpour and then got into your vehicle with wet cloths....
The windows would immediately fog up and you would have to sit and wait with the engine running and the windshield defrost fan on high (god forbid it was a warm day and you couldn't/didn't want to use any heat to help).

Personally...
I'll take the new vehicles with standard A/C and recirc.
If I want outside vent, I can just turn off the A/C, turn up the fan speed and pick the dash vents as the 'outlet' for the air. Or maybe crack a window or the moonroof.

BEST of all, I can hit the recirc when I see a badly tuned diesel (or a smoker) and I don't have to smell either one.

All with minimal wind noise when you are cruising down the road/freeway at 60mph.

Wishing for the old style venting options is kinda like wishing for a return of the horse & buggy.

As for the 'vent shades'...
Had them on my Ford Five Hundred, never really used them.
Haven't wasted my money since.
It also doesn't help that I'm 6'3" tall and like the one person's wife complained, they would just get in the way of my outside vision.

Just my $0.02

Not saying I'm right on this, but when I see them I just always think "they must be smokers" in my head.

Opinions vary.To each his own .I DON'T smoke, never have.I like the looks of them.I am not a fan of the blacked out look that seems to be popular now though.I don't like the look of black wheels and blacked out chrome.Seems kinda Gothic to me.The JGK is a classy vehicle,it needs some chrome or bling. But that is personal choice. If a guy likes it,HEY,it's his vehicle.GO FOR IT..

Re: Window vents Yes/No

Had them on my Yukon Denali and liked them but they just don't 'fit' the look of the Summit IMO. Almost cheapens them in a way but to each their own.......

I agree completely. Chrome will never go out of style. The whole blacked out thing is a fad. It's on minute 14 of it's 15 minutes.

Back in the 90's, those were the only people I ever saw using those things.

Everybody else was glad to have AC.

Maybe, but I'm enjoying the unique look of mine. It doesn't look like any GC on the road. I get a lot of compliments on it, which is far more than I got with my 14 Overland. If I have any complaint about it, it's that they left the window trim chrome... they should've used the trivalent black to match the rest.

Chrome can be overdone as well. That's why I don't have a Summit.

Re: Window vents Yes/No

The problem out here with the whole "blacked out" look is dust and Sun. Nothing shows dust and dirt more brilliantly than black. We get very limited rainfall which means the roads, (even paved one's), get covered with a light layer of dust. That, combined with the extreme heat 6 months out of the year, and a blacked out car is about as practical as a convertible in Fairbanks.

That's not to say you don't see them, you do. The problem is unless they're new, and were washed and detailed 10 minutes before you saw them, they look like crap 90% of the time.

Re: Window vents Yes/No

I would rather have the old vent windows than todays window vents. No matter what car or suv I see them on they seem to cheapen the look.

I wouldn't exactly say "cheapen" but that's only because I can think of half a dozen even more derogatory terms for them.

Re: Window vents Yes/No

I rode in a car that had them and liked them a lot. I think they look good and are very practical. I want to be able to crack my windows in the summer without worrying about rain. I'm waiting for my CRD Overland to be built and deciding on which ones to buy. Can anyone with experience give me opinions on the in window track vs stick on mounting options? Or any particular brands that work / don't work?
