The paddles hide nicely out of sight for those that don't use them, but are handy for those that do. In fact, for the few times I want the flexibility of shifting manually, I've come to prefer them over the old clutch and hand shifter combo. Paddles are far better for engine-braking stops when it's slippery since you don't have to remove power before jumping up to higher RPMs.
I drove manuals for over 20 years and I don't miss them one bit with the paddles.
Likewise, with automatic climate controls with built in air filtration, I don't miss riding with my windows open, either.
