Re: Windshield Replacement

A 6 inch crack on the driver side appeared yesterday, no indication of a stone hit. I do not have the rain activated option, but there are 4 small silver tabs rectangles, about 3/4 x1/2", two in the center and one each at the driver and passenger side, low on the glass along the wiper park area. Anyone know what these are for; do they use the same windshield whether or not the rain activated option is on the GC? Thanks for any info, just want to make sure I order the right windshield.

Can you still see the Mopar part number on your windshield?
If you can, those of us with 2014+rain sensor can tell you if it matches.

... or you could ask your dealer.

They do seem a tad soft. I got a rock chip, and with just a tad of pressure when cleaning it for an epoxy kit, damn thing dropped two cracks about 2 inches long from the central splatter.

Would be interested in how much you get quoted to replace it with a real Mopar in case mine continues to crack.

Re: Windshield Replacement

Tell them you want the original from mopar. Take a picture of the glass sticker and the new one should be very close.

My glass had Guides as to alignment of the window.

Be careful because the will most likely need to change the shroud because of noise. If it's a Grand Che.

Yes, the crack is no where near it. Number is low on the passenger side, crack is eye height coming off the edge into the field of view. It has grown only about an inch in the past 2 days.

Thanks, I'll probably go with Safelite. From what I could find their glass is rated higher than Mopar's, enough negative comments on Mopar as well on this site. For all I know that's where the dealer would send it as they farm out their glass work, Safelite is right across the street from the dealer.

Re: Windshield Replacement

That's interesting, I've never heard of third party glass being better than OEM quality. I'm sure the dealer might farm out the labor to Safelite across the street but with genuine parts.

The glass on the GC is Dot-22, manufactured by Guardian, Chrysler does not manufacture it. Perhaps the Guardian performs better with the rain activation layer, but I don't have that and am more interested in its structural performance. In my experience so far it failed in normal driving, so I'll go with Safelite, never any issues with it on my other vehicles over the years.

Re: Windshield Replacement

There are other things to consider as well. Such as acoustic glass. 2014 GC doesn't have acoustic glass unless it's a Summit (not sure about SRT). Overlands for 2015 got the acoustic windshield as well.

Actually none of the Overland models have acoustic front windshields. That was purely a Summit feature, as well as acoustic rear door windows. I'm pretty sure it was also only on the 2015 Summits as well (so far).

Correct the 2014 summits did not have an acustic windshield

Re: Windshield Replacement

If you could swing it, I'd definitely put an acoustic windshield in. My side windows are like 2 pieces of normal glass stuck together. I've never seen that before, it's pretty cool and notice wind noise is cut down pretty low compared to most vehicles.
