Windshield Replacement

Just picked up my 2015 Summit last Friday. Was driving to work this morning and a rock gets slung all the way from the other side of the interstate and hits smack dab in the middle of my windshield. Glad it was the windshield and not the paint, but it still sucks.

Anyway, it started running immediately so a windshield replacement will be needed. Typically I would not go the dealer route to have this done, but am seriously considering it since the Summit has the acoustic windshield and I don't want to get stuck with an inferior one from a cheapo windshield replacement service.

Anybody ever had theirs replaced at a dealer and if so, am I correct in assumming the replacement will be just like the one from the factory?

Re: Windshield Replacement

Yes. Yes.
But just keep repeating, "OEM Mopar windshield" over and over to whoever you are talking to... just to be sure!

Re: Windshield Replacement

You absolutely want and need the OEM glass, especially with the rain sensitive wipers and the special acoustic glass.

Re: Windshield Replacement

Wow, that really stinks! Let us know how much the replacement is. I have worried about something like that happening, as it has happened to me in another vehicle once. Also, I just paid $200 to get the Crystalline tint on my windshield so I would hate to have to replace it. Sorry for your bad luck.

Thanks for the good info...I'll definitely be going through the dealer. I was certainly PO'd when it happened, but once I calmed down was just glad it didn't hit the body. Deductible is only $100 so not the end of the world.

Re: Windshield Replacement

I'd say you would need OEM for just rain sensing because that's not a glass feature. I had aftermarket glass put in by SafeLite on cars with a rain sensor and had no issues.

There may be a case to be made about the acoustic glass though. As the others already have said stick with OEM.

Re: Windshield Replacement

I wouldn't be surprised if the dealer contracts that replacement out to a glass installer like SafeLite. I'd be surprised if aftermarket glass didn't meet the OEM specs for the Jeep.

Re: Windshield Replacement

A bit off topic but am curious; I have a 2014 Summit and need a window replacement. If I were willing to pay for any up charge; do you think the 2015 acoustic version would fit the 2014? Also has anyone had a chance to compare, or even notice, a significant difference?
I have read there is a 10db reduction in cabin noise from the 14 to the 15, but assume most of this is from the noise canceling effects of the radio system.

Thoughts?

I test drove a 2014 Summit about 8 weeks ago and I don't remember thinking it was loud by any means, but I will say my 2015 is one of the quitest vehicles I have ever been in (especially at highway speeds).

I believe acoustic glass was also added to the front side windows, so that certainly plays a part too.

Thanks for chiming in. If i'm not mistaken it is the passenger/back row that had the acoustic glass added for the 2015 model year. The 2014's have the acoustic glass on the front driver and passenger windows. Again this is my understanding.

Re: Windshield Replacement

And yes, if you wanted to pay for it you could add the acoustic windshield and back row side glass to a 2014 Summit. Or Overland. Or 2015 Overland.

Prices are around $600-700 for the windshield and around $175-200 for rear door glass (each). This does not include installation labor.

Dealers generally don't do glass replacement. I would find a good glass company and have it replaced by them and demand it be the OEM glass. If it doesn't say Mopar it's not OEM. I don't believe that the aftermarket glass is as good. I don't know about now but a couple years ago when I had my windshield replaced on my first wk2 they could only get OEM so it wasn't an issue. I will find out soon though because my glass is cracked up the passenger side of the windshield on my 2014.
