Wow, that's impressive! Not a carpenter? I dunno about that one George. Well done!

Unfortunately, Iím not going to make more knobs like this. Iím not a carpenter and this woodworking is very time consuming. I really appreciate all your comments and kind words about this project!

Regards,

George
Beautiful work - far better than any detail carpenters I know. I am disappointed that you won't be making anymore of these as I was really looking forward to adding one to my JGC once it gets here, but I understand and respect your decision. Thanks for sharing with us and keep us in mind if you decide to produce them later.

Re: Wooden gear knob?

George,
It sure turn out great. I would like to give it a try also. I do have 2 questions though. What type of wood did you use? Secondly, what stain did you use. It is almost dead on for color. Thanks for any help you are willing to provide.

I'll try to post more info about the type of wood, stain and finish today or tomorrow.

George,

That is a beautiful job. I wish you would reconsider. I'll keep an eye on this thread in case you ever do. Put me on the list!

Re: Wooden gear knob?

Very disapointed that George won't be making any more wooden shift knobs.

I picked up this black birds eye maple shift knob for under $80 with shipping

and it fit with little modification.

The photo posted is on my 2012 laredo X.

but I removed it and put it in the 2011 Lareo E in hopes that one day we can source an OEM style leather and wood knob for our WK2

It probably would look great in a Summit.

That is a summit wheel in my car..... intiailly I dyed the leather but was not happy with the color match so I ended up swapping the leather off my OEM steering wheel and stitching on the Dark Grey stone leater onto the summit wheel

Re: Wooden gear knob?

Could you tell me where you found the shift knob? I just got my Summit and I think it would be perfect. I'm not terribly handy so what kind of 'little modification' do you mean?
Thanks!

Thanks!

Here is where is got it www.formymercedes.com

select E class W210 chassis then click on shift knobs

When I said little modification that here is what I meant:

The top of the shift lever tapers from round to flat on both sides.
This is to stop the knob from wiggling from side to side.
I slid a small peice of clear tubing over the shift lever so that the knob would have a snug fit like it is supposed to.
You could probably do same thing with electrical tape.

Thank you so much! That sounds like even I can do it. I've placed my order already.
