10 minute foot well RGB LED ambient lighting.

So yesterday I was looking at the center console and how close the 12v plug was to the left side. I also liked how the blue LED around the port dimmed with the rest of the lights. This is what I wanted for the ambient lights if I did it. So being bored late last night I decided to pull away the panel and take a look. I was able to reach the back of the port and disconnect the plug. So I spliced all three wires since I was not sure what was what other than black being ground. I have easily 50 feet of different types of RGB strips lying around from different projects, so I grabbed some and started to play. I was up until 4 messing with the car, but this initial part took just 10 minutes including figuring it out time, so you may be quicker...

Once I run the LEDs to all the seats, I'll post pictures. Right now I'll post some of what I found. I don't really have time until Friday to play again and actually run wire all over the car. So right now it was just a spool plugged in in one side. Excuse my writing as I'm doing this from my phone. I'll give a better update with instructions when I get a chance.

I'm going to use 50/50 high density reel when I actually install. What I love about this mid though is they dim with the cars other lights as well as independently. They also only go on when the headlamps are on so they are automatic. They can also be turned off at anytime.

Re: 10 minute foot well RGB LED ambient lighting.

Sweet!

I can't wait to hear/see more about this one. I for one am interested in switching over the interior lights (dome/reading lamps) to LED.

Some additional ambient lighting down in the foot wells could be a really nice addition, especially if its this "easy".

Thanks for posting up the additional details/instructions/photos when you get a chance.

Re: 10 minute foot well RGB LED ambient lighting.

I think the pink/yellow wire is the ACC switched power for the port

The Orange/brown I think it the instrument cluster lighting circuit.

In the JGC 2011-2013 WK2 the RUN/START signal color code throughtout the chassis is pink/green. So I am guessing the WD chassis RUN start is some Variation of pink as well.

DAVEWG

There is a thread in the WK2 section that is titled "Here it is custom ambient footwell lighting" you can use that as a basis to add footwell lighting to your WD.

I wasn't sure what was what since Idid this on a whim. The black is obviously ground, The Orange with a blueish gray stripe seems to bethe lighting circuit which dims with theother lights which would make the pink/yellow the ACC. What was great was being able to get to what I needed w/o taking the whole car apart. I looked into the mopar kits for $300 and saw people taking apart the whole dash to install. I did this free (minus whatever I spent on parts awhile back, maybe $40 in parts) and I didn'teven remove the panel, I just kinda pulled it to the side.

Re: 10 minute foot well RGB LED ambient lighting.

Thanks for saving me a bunch of time Gtaz, that's great news. I looked at the mopar light instructions too and had to laugh how complicated and expensive they make it.

Dave, I replaced the interior lights with leds, it's another horror story I'll write up in a few days. The damn stock bulbs wouldn't come out, lots of glass shards I had to vacuum up and more broken clips and of course the manual was wrong on some bulb types, waiting for new ones.

UGH! Bonkers. You'd think they'd make it easier to replace the bulbs, unless they expect them to never burn out....

Glad to know the manual is wrong, since I just posted on the XenonDepot thread asking for help putting together a kit for the Durango interior.

You can see it here - Exclusive Pricing on XenonDepot.com HID Kits - Save Big! - Page 54 - Jeep Garage - Jeep Forum.

They don't have a lighting guide, and asked me for the bulb types/quantity. Guess where I was going to get that info from...

I assume the 3rd edition manual on Dodge's site isn't corrected.

Correct, all the bulbs are the T10 194 wedge type. The lights you turn on with the buttons (6 of them on the roof, 2 per row) are not replaceable so you end up with a funky yellow and white led mix. The glove box is strange, I pulled the housing out but it's all enclosed and haven't figured out how to open it up yet to get a look at the bulb.

i bought a kit from precisionled but they suck, not very bright, returning those. I place another order from vleds, always used them in the past, great products with the lastest led tech. Waiting on those before I write up a full report.

Yuck. Which ones were you replacing then? Or are you living with the funky mix of hues (Okay, does that sounds like the name of a band - Funky Mix of Hues??)?

Vertrkr, could you post maybe Ina new thread for everyone, all the lights you changed and what model they are, I think a bunch of us want to do this. I fought a reflection of my car in the rear of another yesterday and noticed how bad the fog lights look in another color. I heard people mention it on these forums but never thought twice about it until I saw it yesterday.

I guess it's a better band name than a description you give a DR...

Living with the funky hue. Replacing 2 foot well lights, 2 front dome, 1 middle dome, 1 rear dome, 2 tailgate lights.

I will post a new thread, but I want to wait until I get the new leds in to make sure there are no surprises and not to post any bad info. These bulbs can be tricky from manufacture to manufacture sometimes, depending on if the contacts are single or double sided and its polarity.
