2014 Citadel With Blu-Ray - Initial Impressions

Hi Everyone.

My name is Tim and I live in Sandy, Utah (a suburb of Salt Lake City). This is my first post on this forum, but I've been a member and been reading this forum for a few months now.

I wasn't sure if anyone had received their Durango with the blu-ray package yet. I just got mine yesterday, so I wanted to chime in and say a few words.

I've been reading through the "Features and Changes" thread for some time where the discussion for a little while revolved around the VGA screens and the concern of their resolution and then the delay in production of vehicles with the blu-ray package. I also noticed people discussing the last few digits of their vehicle's VIN number and whose followed whose and when to expect production etc. I actually ordered my 2014 Durango Citadel on July 11th, and yeah, it was delayed by the blu-ray. It finally arrived on Thursday evening and I brought it home yesterday.

My main specs:

Citadel, Hemi, AWD
Maximum Steel Metallic Exterior
Black/Light Frost Beige Lux Leather Interior
2nd Row Bucket Seats
Technology Package
Blu-Ray Package
Trailer Tow Package

I leased a 2011 Durango Citadel from March 2011 to March 2013, so this is my second 3rd Gen Durango. My 2011 was the also the AWD Hemi, but it was Inferno Red and had the Black/Tan interior.

When my wife and I ordered this 2014, she wanted to go with the light frost beige leather instead of the black/tan. She had seen it in a 2013 Durango and wanted to make the change. I had a hard time ordering it that way as I loved the black/tan look of our 2011. It went really well with the Inferno Red. But I have no reservations now. The light frost beige is beautiful, and goes absolutely perfectly with the Maximum Steel Metallic paint.

I'll admit that I was concerned with the supposed VGA screens included in the blu-ray package. (Did anyone post the actual specs? I don't remember, but will go back and look.) I sat and watched a couple chapters of a couple different blu-rays last night (one an action movie, the other a Disney animated classic) and have no concerns at all now. They look to be at least 720p resolution to me (whether they are or not). And the screen size is perfect for the viewing distance. The screens actually look big, in my opinion. I told my wife, "I feel like I'm at a drive-in theater." I like to think of myself as somewhat of an HD enthusiast, which is why I had to have the blu-ray in my 2014 Durango to begin with. That and I have two young kids, and didn't have the DVD system in my 2011 Durango. Anyway, I just want to say that in my opinion, the blu-ray package is amazing, and I think the screens look great. If you are reading this and still might have reservations (like I did), I truly don't think you will once you actually see how good they look.

I am absolutely ecstatic with this vehicle. I think it is the most refined, beautiful vehicle I've personally ever seen/driven, and I've worked at various car dealerships and driven Escalades, Navigators, etc. I don't think there is a better vehicle to be had in the $40-55k range.

If anyone wants to see pics, or has any questions, let me know and I'll reply.

--Tim

I believe you are the first here with the entertainment system, thought it would be Joey. Congo rats. Glad it turned out well.

Re: 2014 Citadel With Blu-Ray - Initial Impressions

Congratulations on your Durango!

You and I ordered exactly the same vehicles - all the same colors and options - so, let me be the first to say that you have very good taste! I am glad to hear your thoughts on the light frost beige and how it goes with the max steel. We never were able to actually see a Durango with light frost beige, and had concerns about which exterior colors would match it best.

I'm sure everyone readying wants to see pictures and more thoughts on the DVD. Everyone except me, that is. Mine will be delivered any day now. The excitement is killing us. And while I want pictures and impressions of how the system works, I have decided that I want to be somewhat surprised when I get my vehicle. : )

Seriously, I think some pictures and thoughts would be a good idea. You are, to my knowledge, the first to get a production (non-pilot) Durango with the rear dvd.

Enjoy your Durango!

Congrats on the new D. Glad to see your happy with the light frost interior going good with the Max. Steel. I to ordered a Max. Steel with light frost beige. I was a little hesitant at first thinking it would be to light, but was lucky enough to see one in person and thought it looked great with the wood trim. Enjoy the new ride and look forward to more of your impressions of D and hemi .

Congrats Bigtimmo!

I also went with the light frost beige, but paired with granite crystal. Although I also have a black one with tan interior coming on so I guess technically I'll be able to choose between the two.

Happy to hear the blu-ray looks good! Thanks for sharing your initial thoughts. My kids are going to love it for our upcoming trip. Can you comment on the size and comfort of the headphones? And how many headphones do they give you? 2 or 4? Finally, is there some special storage spot for the remote? (I don't think there is, but thought I'd ask).

I'm charging the battery for my digital camera now. I don't use it much so when I went to take some pics just now, I discovered the battery was dead. I'd rather take some good, high-resolution pics and upload those then some sub-par pics from my iphone.

I'll have some up here in a bit.

There was a box labeled "Audio Kit" which came with two sets of wireless, UConnect headphones, a small remote control, and 6 AAA batteries (2 batteries in each device). The headphones are really lightweight, pretty simple, and work well. I tried them out. They don't have much bass, but the sound is clear and vivid. They're kinda basic in that they don't cover your ears (not noise-cancelling by any means), and remind me of Sony Walkman/Discman headphones because of the foam earpiece/speaker cover. The earpieces also fold inward (flat) so you can easily store them in the seatback compartments since they sit flat. My 3-year-old daughter tried them out and liked them. I thought she'd want to take them right off, but she sat there just watching her Little Mermaid Blu Ray like magic.

Also, there's no specific place to store the remote, but it's small and could go anywhere. I'll just keep mine with one of the sets of headphones in the compartment behind the driver's seat. The remote is pretty nice though too. All the keys are blue LED backlit, and the remote pulls up really easy -to-use menus on the screens.

I'll post some pics of the headphones and remote here in a bit. Just charging the battery to my camera now.

I thought I might be one of the first since my order went in in July. I at least hoped my order would be a priority due to its age. I also thought I'd be one of the lucky ones to get theirs before the 11/18 date that was mentioned, since there was word a few would be produced. I lucked out I guess.

I believe it turned out that blu-ray for the Durango went into production about October 10....and the Nov 18 date turned out to be the production date for the Grand Cherokee blu-ray. So, its lucky we ordered Durango's and not grand Cherokees.

Thank you Tim for your impressions. Anymore insight will be appreciated. If seems like the rear entertainment system was worth the wait. I'm looking forward to testing my Roku3 with it. Cheers!

Re: 2014 Citadel With Blu-Ray - Initial Impressions

Since I'm so new, I couldn't figure out how to post more than 3 pics at a time (maybe I don't yet have the privileges to do so). I was reading through the FAQ's, but still couldn't figure out if I could.

So, I just put together a quick little "blog" on blogspot. All it is is my pics I just took though, no girly bloogy stuff.

Take a look, comment here if you want to or have any questions.

Thanks for the pics...your D looks great!

I had no idea you can also display the video on the front center stack. I assume though it only displays when in park.

So the next obvious question is can that be defeated so the front passenger can watch the video while in motion...
