I am going to look into the screen resolution thing a little closer. The wording doesn't totally make sense. It may very well be exactly as Milous says and at that screen size resolution is not the defining attribute but something is off with this and it isn't Milous but possibly the specifications.

640x480 is a computer resolution. Video doesn't do 640x480 so I think Chrysler put something down wrong or this is the first not video format LCD in a very long time.

#1,040 ·
640x480 is standard for 480i or 480p video in 4:3 aspect ratio. 854x480 would be standard for 480i or 480p in 16:9 format. So there's nothing funny about the stated resolution if the displays are in 4:3 aspect and they only support up to 480p format. Well, nothing funny beside it being sad...

#1,041 ·
For everyone concerned about this: HD video on a screen that small would also be ridiculous. It's a bit like the "resolution wars" that have taken place on smartphones--it's a bit silly (more extreme in the smartphone case as the screens are even smaller). On small screens, higher resolution becomes a tax on the processing for little visual gain...human visual perception just isn't THAT good, especially with average viewing distances.

#1,042 · (Edited)
I don't disagree with your thinking but this screen being much larger, and being approximately 24" away it seems that the resolution is out of sync.

As you can see these appear to be wide screen, but we still need to verify the resolution etc. I don't think 1080p is needed at this size by any means.

#1,046 ·
Sorry...but no. It may have looked better because the graphics engine was changed or different, or more likely because you thought it would look better (confirmation bias). Slightly better, perhaps...not "phenomenally" better by any means. Your eye can only pick out so much detail at the distances given. Look closer, and sure...you can begin to discern more differences.

#1,048 ·
Whatever you say. I know what my eyes see, and the clarity (even on still pictures) on my Galaxy S4 is better (hands down) than my Galaxy Nexus.

Yes, my kids will notice that Up (would never let them watch Sponge Bob) looks very different on their 7 inch screens at 20" compared to the 55" inch at 48" away in our family room.

Apart from that fact, the one that would have paid for it (me) will know that he got duped out of $1800 for $400 worth of tech that was touted as a major feature upgrade.

Well, coming from an engineer's perspective I'd say marketing is working well on you :)

Well, hmm. Okay, I'll tell you what. Go buy that run of the mill set of commercial displays in a store and put it in your vehicle. Then, let me know how well it works in the temperature extremes your vehicle will be exposed to. You ARE aware that small high resolution displays perform very poorly when exposed to cold temperatures right? And you're aware that standard commercial grade displays will basically eat themselves if exposed to the hot and cold extremes that will occur in a vehicle right?

While I certainly believe cost has something to do with the display choice, you aren't factoring all the information in before getting all bowed up. These displays are more expensive to begin with as they have to be rated to wider temperature ranges (and trust me...that shoots costs up quickly). Most are also rated for vibration resistance.

#1,058 ·
They shouldn't even be allowed to market VGA as "high resolution". Maybe they were referring to 4x the VGA resolution, which would be 1280x960 (right?).

Either way, 90% of consumers are going to expect the displays to be high definition. It is what you associate with blu-ray, not to mention what I would expect in a $2000 option.

I just paid $2,400 for THREE Dell XPS 8700 desktop computers with core i7 processors and each with a 23.5" 1080p IPS display.

I have some serious debating to do over the next few days.

#1,079 ·
Can I politely ask that you guys start a thread on video tech, batteries and alternate fuel sources.

Milous will post some more info on the actual display technology but let's not completely hijack the features and changes thread as the Tesla and Durango will not be mating any time soon.

This is a high resolution image of an actual display for the Blu-Ray DVD system. It was taken with an 18 megapixel SLR camera. Resize this image on a good computer screen at 9" and position away from yourself as if it is the rear screen display. It is a Blu-Ray playing, you be the judge of the quality. You will note an extremely high color depth not seen in competitor displays. The camera does show the pixels in a way that is more visible than the actual display.

Well, that definitely helps a lot. Only remaining question is when I can order a Durango with it. Checking freakin donlen every day is driving me. crazy. Damn you new car itch. :D

If 10/1 comes and goes, I'll order without the DVD system.

#1,084 ·
Soo.... what's this dust up about?

The pricing on the BluRay displays?

My 12 year old and 5 year old don't care about resolution, they just want to watch Cartoons while we're on a long drive.

It's not like we're doing surgery with these things...

That said, I opted for 2 Kindle Fire HDs and a nice mount (removable).

Total investment, $350, and because I'm a Prime member, I can stream videos and games for free.

/shrug

Different strokes, different folks. I was not interested in dropping $2k+ on something like this (when I can get something or better for about a 80% savings).

Carry on...

Hey Gang. I was able to call Vizualogic and see what their active headrest solution looks like. I was a bit nervous that it would be too bulky, but it doesn't look bad to me at all.

These guys claim to match the interior materials "perfectly", and I agree it looks factory.

Here is a photo of the tablet active headrest piece.

Not bad eh?

#1,097 ·
The Owner's Manual talks about the Active Head Restraints on the Durango and says this at page 62:

"The Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) determines whether the severity, or type of rear impact will require the Active Head Restraints (AHR) to deploy. If a rear impact requires deployment, both the driver and front passenger seat AHRs will be deployed. When AHRs deploy during a rear impact, the front half of the head restraint extends forward to minimize the gap between the back of the occupant’s head and the AHR. This system is designed to help prevent or reduce the extent of injuries to the driver and front passenger in certain types of rear impacts.

NOTE: The Active Head Restraints (AHR) may or may not deploy in the event of a front or side impact. However if during a front impact, a secondary rear impact occurs, the AHR may deploy based on the sever- ity and type of the impact."

I personnally would not want to muck around with a solution that replaces the Active Head Restraints or potentially interferes with them. While Chrysler certainly can make design mistakes, they're a big company, with the financial wherewithal, either on their own or through reinsurance, to stand behind their products. I doubt the same can be said for this company. I appreciate your posts, but I, for one, wouldn't bite.

Better get some references that these guys have tied into the 2014 electrical systems... There have been issues, just make sure the installer has experience with the 2014s, they ARE NOT the same animal.

Excerpt from diagnostics below.

Discussion:
Special design considerations are incorporated into this vehicle's electronic systems to optimize the
performance and operation. Any aftermarket equipment installations altering the operation of the
current circuit functions including load shedding power sources should be considered and installed
only by trained personnel.

Aftermarket installations affecting our systems have involved, routing of wiring along with the
connections to direct power sources, connections to load shedding power sources and grounding
locations. Some documented symptoms created from these installations have been, battery drain,
navigation system and cluster continuous boot up, erratic warning lamp illumination, interior lamps
that stay illuminated. These are some of the conditions that have been attributed to aftermarket
installations. Review any suspect conditions combined with a potential aftermarket installation to
define the appropriate repair action.

In some cases identifying if the vehicle is going into a bus sleep state, vehicle off minimal IOD and
remaining in that state as expected, can help identify any add on component issues. Verification
could be done through IOD monitoring for power up and down cycles showing higher then expected ignition off draw.

o Examples: Radios, Amplifiers, DVD Players And Screens
o These could have enough draw to cause load shed mitigation (probably on a different circuit)

Thanks for the heads up. This sounds like good info to take with me to determine if they know what they are doing. If not... I'll walk away like Pacino in Heat :)

It's more likely that I'll have my posse with me (a.k.a. my bro-in-law who is a robotics engineer) and have him do the grilling while I repeat an occasional "Yeah!".

Ugh, directly from Chrysler customer service:

"According to our provided resources, we have a preliminary release date of Nov 18, 2013 for the Rear Seat DVD Entertainment System, but please be advised that this information is preliminary and may be subject to*change."

That means I wouldn't get my Durango until 1st half of January. What to do, what's to do. I can wait that long, but I really don't want to.

@$&*@!%&$&@!!

I'm hoping and praying that what they mean by "release date" is that's when they expect them to either start hitting showrooms, or perhaps when they will be available again for new orders. If this is in fact the new estimate for first production I am going to seriously consider cancelling my order.

Is anyone aware of what the latest Uconnect software is? Is it 13.33.7?

#1,127 ·
This is somewhat in flux at the moment:

I have read that the Durangos are currently shipping with 13.33.7.

Jeep Grand Cherokees are currently shipping with 13.31.X. However, 13.31.X is still not generally available to dealers or to the public to update their units with. So the latest official "upgrade" for the JGC is still 13.19.

I'm guessing that 13.33.7 is more or less the same as 13.31. At some point, Chryco should be merging the code base so that the same uconnect software is available for all models with the same system (some RAM trucks, Jeep Grand Cherokee and now Durango).

That all being said, I would not expect an upgrade from 13.33.7 to be available for probably at least 3 months. But Willx is "the man" here when it comes to Uconnect.

If you become a Jeep Garage subscriber, you'll have access to the uConnect forums where we generally get the inside scoop on this stuff...

JoeyD you shouldn't be far behind!
Congrats! This is promising news in light of recent reports! So what does this 11/18 date mean exactly? Is the language "release date" referring to when dealer stock orders with the rear DVD option will be "released" from the factory, or is it when initial rear DVD production is scheduled to begin?
