Yes the steering is different as well. I believe the exhaust on limited V8 and Citadel are the the same (but not 100% sure). The V6 exhaust is different though. Single exhaust on all V6's except for the Citadel which will give you dual exhaust. Also Citadel gives you heavy duty brakes. Dave nice link:)

Same exhaust on V8 Limited/Citadel

The V6 exhaust is different though. Single exhaust on all V6's except for the Citadel which will give you dual exhaust.
Also correct.

#1,233 ·
You are right, you will get the upgraded brakes with the Hemi, also, the exuast is the same on all models.

With the Hemi you automatically get the dual exhaust upgrade. you can also pay for the upgrade in the limited with the V6 but you get the dual exhaust no matter what with the citadel and obviously with the R/T as it only comes in Hemi.

#1,236 · (Edited)
Got it on the Hammock. very useful, thanks.

Regarding the exhaust, others have posted the exhaust on the Limited/Citadel is different/quieter than on the R/T.

So, based on the last several posts, I will order the Hemi because:

PROS
1. Upgrade to heavy duty brakes
2. Upgrade to Dual Exhaust (on Limited)
3. ZF built transmission
4. Hydraulic Steering (more solid feeling maybe?)
5. More sophisticated AWD system
6. More power on demand

CONS
1. Worse fuel economy
2. Some additional maintenance
3. Slightly higher monthly payment

Did I miss anything?

#1,238 ·
I don't think you missed anything, and I think you're making a fantastic choice. Congratulations on your new Limited!

#1,241 · (Edited)
Great comments and encouragement -- Thank you!
I drove the V6 for the second time this morning and really liked it.
That's why i posted this morning to get some advice -- and eveyone's comments really helped!

Since I drive about 10K miles/yr. so the fuel hit won't be so bad.
Also, I am leasing, so the monthly doesn't go up too much as you only pay the depreciation over three years. (by the way, the MF is very low from Chrysler financial, 0.0002 on the Limited and 0.0005 on the Citadel)

Now that i have the Hemi decision behind me, i have two other small questions.

1. Anyone get the skid plates? I drive in VT a couple of times a year and have done some light off-road. Do they weigh alot? Sounds like a reasonable add on at build time.

2. Can i order the passenger seat on he Limited to have 8 way and memory as a stand alone option?

#1,242 ·
I think the passenger seat only gets 8-way (actually 12-way with lumbar) with the leather upgrade. and the passenger never gets memory if thats what you were saying? but i suggest trying to build what you want here.

Dodge -Build & Price - Select Model

I don't think the dealer can do much beyond whats the site has unless they do it after market and i just don't see that as being worth the price, especially on a lease. Also, parts are hard to come by right now as the car is way too new.

#1,247 · (Edited)
Allright, so here is my final order:

Durango Limited
1. Billet Silver / Black interior
2. Hemi
3. Premium Group
4. Safety/Security & Convenience
5. 2nd Row Fold & Tumble Captains Chairs
6. Trailer Tow Group (for the load leveling suspension and the spare tire and so i can put the bike rack in the hitch receiver)
7. Skid Plates

(Its basically a Citadel without chrome and perf. leather, ventilated seats and a few other goodies!)
Oh, and I joined Access Fund thanks to this forum and am getting the below invoice pricing!
Thanks again for all the input/advice today! :D

#1,252 ·
Sorry I missed on the fun but you were in good hands. Congratulations!

For the Access Fund, what they did was mail me a goodie package with some stickers and stuff. On the back of the membership card was the code required to get your control number from Chrysler Affiliates. That good package came around 30 days later... which is the duration they require before getting the number. If somebody joins before ordering, they should be in good shape given orders take a good 30 days anyway.

Are there any group buys or below invoice deals in southern California on these? I understand that Koons in DC will do 5% below invoice, but DC is the other side of the USA, so I'd have substantial travel costs which would consume the savings.

What I want, if the seats prove good, is a Citadel with the V8, rear wheel drive, second row captain's chairs (without the big console), technology group, white or sandstone exterior, black and light frost interior.

We sat in a Citadel today and liked it. The ones at the recent car show did not have power, so the seats could not be moved.

I need to find a way to rent one so I can get a long enough test drive to be sure I'm not make a mistake with regard to seat comfort.

#1,254 ·
I purchased my car from Koons out here by DC. I happened to have a friends and family discount which gave me below invoice on a 2014 Durango R/T but they were not about to give me anything close without that code from the factory. It is true that you could probably get below invoice (I should say "Invoice" becasue we all know what a joke that is.) with a 2013 model, I've seen some 8K+ off, but I doubt you'll find a deal on a 2014 for a few months yet. Where did you hear you could get a deal like this at Koons?

I'm sure you've seen vertrkr's pictures. That's a sandstone Citadel and I must say... that color seems to work with the chrome very well. You've put together a nice package for your area.

I wish I could comment on the seats but I have the Limited and it's a different leather. I find the Limited's seats to be comfortable and nicely adjustable in all directions. The padding on mine feels good, I don't have any issues with that.

It sounds like you have a solid understanding on the pricing.

#1,268 ·
Yeah, That would be a good deal for a 2014 R/T. It's around what I ended up with.

#1,270 · (Edited)
Yesterday I realized that I had not priced an R/T, so did and found it a little over $3,000 less than a Citadel. I drove an RT yesterday, and liked it.

The exhaust was not too loud. For a while, I had an exhaust system on my 1996 Impala SS which was so loud it would set off car alarms in parking structures, but that drone gets old very quickly, and the Durango R/T does not drone.

The ride did not seem too stiff or rough, but smoother and quieter than my Explorer.

I also had realized that a black interior, something I've never had, would work with the ventilated seats and remote start.

#1,272 · (Edited)
I have a black R/T, good choice.

The difference between the R/T and the Citadel is $2,000 no matter if you get the RWD or AWD. once you spec match, there is nothing that the Citadel has that the R/T doesn't minus some chrome which I think (my opinion) looks bad or not as good as the solid black look. I got everything minus DVD/Bluray (didn't want to wait and didn't need it, no kids yet) and a rear center console so my dog could chill on pads on the ground when I have 6 people in the car. It came out to $49,400 with destination. The only option the Citadel has that the R/T doesn't (from their build site) is skid plates which you can get from Mopar if you ask.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you're paying $2,000 for chrome accents and Nappa leather option as a standard.

After putting the tape measure to the Durango and Grand Cherokee yesterday, it was obvious I'd have to have part of the 2nd row seats down in either, so I'm focusing on the smaller and lighter Grand Cherokee. The only mid-sized SUV with a wide enough cargo compartment that I would not need part of the 2nd row down is the Hyundai Santa Fe (either version), but it has several defects which precluded further consideration of it. Suburbans and Expeditions and such are too large to consider.

#1,289 ·
Joey,

That's too funny as the Durango I just ordered is a replacement for my 2002 Montana as well! You must have started a trend. Mine is an extended edition without
Dvd or awd.
I still remember driving the new Montana home from the dealer 12 years ago. I know yours isn't AWD because I think I have one of only 2 or 3 ever sold. :). There are so few AWD models that there is actually no aftermarket for exhaust! My repair shop had to custom bend pipes for it!

I was looking at the press reports and as of last June CEO Sergio Marchionne was saying that the 2015 model year could be the last one for the Durango. So it looks like it may still meet its demise in the near future. I hope I'm wrong on that.
Actually...I'm torn on this.

On one hand, I'd like the D to hang around. Would be great to see what dodge can do with a complete redesign in 2017 or so.

On the other, I like having a "different / not so popular" vehicle. While everyone around here is driving Pilots, MDXs, Merc GLs, Explorers, and Lambdas (Traverse / Enclave / Acadia), I personally know of NO ONE who is driving a 3rd gen Durango, and see relatively few of them on the road. (Still have yet to see any '14s on the road.)

I feel like I'm back in the Boy Scouts and earned my "I did more research than you did and found the diamond in the rough" badge. :) If the Durango isn't around in a couple more years, it won't be because it's not a quality vehicle...it's because most people simply aren't as smart as we are...it's just a cross we must bear....

#1,306 ·
I agree with all above too. Couldn't have been better put. One of the reasons I eventually soured on getting a new Explorer last winter (& there were a number of reasons) was that there were so damned many of them on the roads, I got tired of looking at them. I live in a relatively busy NJ town west of NYC and might seen a Durango once every two or three weeks if I'm lucky--and when I do, I crane my neck and watch it till it disappears over the horizon. I work in lower manhattan and I might see a Durango there once every 3-4-5 weeks, really. I like it that way (although I'm sure Dodge would disagree with that). But maybe this thing is going to be the sleeper & people will wake up and sales will explode this year due to the refresh. I'm not sure how any red blooded American male or female cannot look at it and say, wow! Joey D eloquently & articulately put it best: diamond in the rough (perhaps we ought to have a Durango Poets Society, except after 2015, it might have to be called the Dead Durango's Poets Society:D).

I too agree with you all and we all seem to have found the Durango through similar experiences. However, I wonder how much of Durango's sleeper status had been due to poor marketing efforts - prior to Will Ferrell - versus brand resistance. If the Jeep badge was slapped on it, albeit there would be some market cannibalizing sales, I think for the most part it would be outperforming expectations. I think this current refresh and marketing efforts however may save the Durango over brand resistance/hesitance. Still, bringing the Grand Wagoneer back to Jeep, improves Jeep's business model, product lineup and shows off class leading/competitive feature-sets and is akin to Range Rover's recent successful moves.

Me too....again. I have loved and practically lived in my Toyota 4Runner Ltd. for the last 14 years. I knew, after test driving several gorgeous sedans, that I still wanted sit up a little higher, still be able to haul lots of stuff, but enjoy some of the creature comforts found in automobiles built in the new millennium....which isn't even so new anymore.

I've been drawn to the Durango since my cousin ended up with a Crew in 2011. I really started to get serious last year, but was put off a little by the way the five speed V6 felt when trying to head up a highway on ramp. After further research revealed the plans for a refresh in 2014 that would include an eight speed transmission and some interior and exterior refinements, I decided I could wait a little longer. I also thought it would give me a chance to fall for a status brand/luxury vehicle like theBMW X5, MB ML or the Audi Q5/7. They were sure nice. And pricey. I kept coming back to the Durango as the best combination of size and features for the money.....and I'd like to think it will be far less expensive to maintain over the long haul.

Part of the equation was our plan to (eventually) relocate to Dallas. After life in a small town in Southern Indiana I was convinced I would need a tank with a big engine to keep up with the traffic and stay alive. Lots of big &ss trucks on the highways, and shopping mall parking lots loaded with lookalike luxury cars. Didn't want one of those after all, and still kept coming back to the Durango.

Why all the bloviating? Really only wanted to say that one of the aspects I like the very best is that the Durango is NOT every other vehicle on the highway or in the parking lot. I want to see more, I want the better transmission and the refresh to boost sales, and I want the Anchorman 2 tie-in to raise curiosity and awareness for this good looking beast. I may not be able to change out my fog lights for something I like better, or add my own running boards, but I WILL figure out how to change my ringtone to the music from those commercials (supposedly Grazing in The Grass by Friends of Distinction, FYI :)

Johnatbv, The Hemi use to call for spark plugs to be changed every 30,000 miles (total of 16). The new owners manual I read online now states it is now 100,000 which is in line with the v6. So it appears maintenance intervals should be about the same. Just will be a little more on parts and more labor time.

For those wondering about multiple car seats in the second row, the Radian RXT (3 in 1, rear-forward-booster) fits 3 across. With some tweaking of the seats, I was able to fit two of these Radians in the 60% two seat section just barely leaving enough space to leave the 40% seat free to fold down to access the third row.
