Lastnight the wife and I spent about 2 hours looking at a 2014 JGC Overland next to a 2013 Durango Citadel.

It came down to a couple things:
[*]MPG of the Diesel[*]4x4 of the Diesel[*]Luxury feeling of the Overland (it was like sitting inside my Merc)[*]Loss of addons in the Rango (Pano roof for example)[*]Cargo room of the Rango[*]3rd row in the Rango[*]Price of the Rango (would be quite a bit cheaper)[*]Resale value
As much as I love that 3rd row and all the extra storage (almost an extra foot in length versus the JGC), the loss of the 4L gearing without buying the Hemi (dear god no way am I paying that fuel bill), and the loss of some of the luxury goodies and the potential hit the resale will take when they phase out the Rango is what is pushing me to stick with the JGC Overland CRD.

Had they actually given the Rango a 4L with the V6, it probably would have been my pick.

I will say I do really like the styling of the new Rango. Looks mean and sporty.

I'll most likely drive the Jeep until the Grand Wagoneer comes out in a couple years, switch over to it and gain the 3rd row (along with all the goodies).
Good grief, you have provided an excellent comparison and you've convinced me that perhaps I SHOULD go drive a JGC Overland. What does the CRD stand for? I do like the mean and sporty look of the restyled Durango, even though I've said it looks like it now has a fat lip and is wearing illuminated dark shades across the back end. I have had concerns about resale also with the Durango, as I don't expect to hang on to it for nearly as long as my current vehicle. I tend to agree with you regarding a combo of three reasons why nobody is burning up my inbox with order forms, but I have been very clear that I do NOT want A 2013 (or do I, if they will practically "give" me one?), I have stated to all that I understand no more orders can be placed until 8/9, but I want to have an order IN PLACE to submit that day, and I agree about no price making some dealers skittish, but if some will do it I'd like to find one that will. I hate to sound redundant, but how on earth does an auto manufacturer open order banks with NO PRICING and expect their dealerships to handle that?

Darn it, I'm venting again........

Re: 2014 Durango - Features and Changes

Don't get me wrong, it's honestly a hard choice.

I really rather like the Durango, but the loss of the 4Low, and some of the features found in the Overland is a hard pill to swallow from my end.

CRD = Common Rail Diesel.

It will actually be called "EcoDiesel"

If it was something you said, I think I must have said the exact same thing to my dealer #1.

Does that mean you've decided to cross over to the JGC or are you still on the fence?

We're off to our dealer on Saturday morning. I'll let you know what we find out regarding pricing. As near as I can tell they incentives did NOT change for August (which I find surprising if they're trying to move the metal).

The CRD in the JGC appeals to me completely, but alas we need that third row still (to many carpool years left with the boys).

Re: 2014 Durango - Features and Changes

Forward collision warning with crash mitigation. I can't find info on what Crash Mitigation does. The older models just have FCW but '14 now adds crash mitigation. I've looked everywhere for the Durango but never found more info about it. At the minimum I assume it would start to auto apply brakes to lessen the severity of a crash but it could be so much more.

You are correct it will apply brakes as well as the audio and visual warnings. Your choice of words is also very accurate it is designed to lessen injury and impact strength. It does not take over completely to stop the vehicle.

I asked my dealer to show me what was available, that screenshot is from his Chrysler rep. I made the same assumption about the gloss black. They're ugly.

Well, my faith has been restored just a bit. Thanks to Temerarius suggesting I peruse the JGC Texas buying info, I contacted a highly recommended Houston sales person last week. He was silent for awhile, but I got an email yesterday, with an apology, and a willingness to place an order for me on the 9th. Since I'll be spending more time in Dallas by the time the vehicle would be available, Houston isn't such a bad place to go for a good deal. And so far, with an affiliate# that is garnering some just 1% under invoice....well, this guy has offered to beat that by a few percent. Now my husband is suspicious that he will present a false invoice in order to do this....anybody ever encounter such a situation?

Nope.

But, make sure you get it in writing (email) that they will offer you X% under invoice and then make sure you DO THE MATHS. That means setting up a spreadsheet that lays out the base model you are ordering, all the options as line items, the MSRP Price, the Invoice price, and the "discounted" price. Make sure you include things like Sales Tax, Doc Fee, and Destination Fee. Present that to the dealer via email and get their approval that your numbers are correct (or atleast within a couple hundred dollars).

Make sure that you get a written agreement that those numbers are correct from the dealer. If they vary, make sure they explain why, and that the reason makes good sense (Licensing fee maybe wonky for instance).

If the doc fee is more than competitors (should be listed in fine print in all web ads and print ads), demand clarification (i.e. Call them on their BS).

IF you have a trade in, take it to SEVERAL dealers to get "bids" on what they'd offer on the rig. Use that as leverage going in.

And remember, if they get twitchy and won't agree to this stuff or their destination fee is high, their Doc Fee is high, and they won't budge... go to another dealer. You can have a dealer intercept a transport or even swap a rig from another lot and have it brought to their dealership for no extra cost (if they say otherwise, walk away).

As for going under invoice, you will find it's far more common than you may think. If you come in with a control number and some confidence, you should be walking out with *atleast* 2-3% under invoice. If you deal with a high volume place, you can squeeze out an additional 2%-4% on top of that.

85% sure I'm going JGC Overland Diesel at this point.

The diesel is just so damn nice (ya pay for it though, and extra $4k on the Overland, less on the Limited). Decent HP, but ridiculous amounts of torque. Means towing or going up mountains (Cascades around here) is a joke for the diesel. Also makes roadtrips nice as you have 700+ miles of range on single tank.

Fuel econ better than the V6, with the power and performance of the Hemi. Nummy.

That and the additional touches of goodness are hard to resist.

I did try out a Ford Explorer Sport as well, but it did not suit me very well (felt like a huge bubble). It was difficult to maneuver in the parking lots, kept scraping the front air damn on my drive way, and was seemingly designed for someone twice my girth (lots of space between the center console and the door). Now, I will say the engine in that thing is INSANE. You push the peddle down and you are in for some violent acceleration.
