Question Re: 2014 Durango - Features and Changes

I guess I should have asked this before...

Are there any differences in the shape/sizing of the front seats between 2013 and 2014?

More importantly changes in the design of the front headrests between the two model years. My wife liked the seats in the 2013 and how the headrest felt against her head (in other words her pony tail fit comfortably).

We're worried that if we get a 2014 and there are problems we're going to be stuck with a truck she won't be comfortable driving.

Our vehicle would be WITHOUT the rear entertainment screens.

Fingers crossed that the seats are the same - impossible to tell from pictures.

Re: 2014 Durango - Features and Changes

I just found an article on fuel economy of the 2014. I see Chrysler numbers for all but the 6 cylinder AWD. Chrysler is saying the 2WD V6 gets 18/25.

Rumor has it that the 2014's begin their production run 2nd shift today!
Even if not true, it won't be long! Source is a message in the 2014 GC forum here.

Re: 2014 Durango - Features and Changes

I'm in!
Got my VON today for a Limited AWD in granite with the tow, nav, and safety package.
Nobody wants to read a novel but I want to be helpful to others so I'll *try* to be brief.

It was a long and frustrating road. I don't understand why it was so difficult for so many of us to get the time of day from so many dealers. I started out with 2 dealers, grew to 12 easily, and wound up with 2 dealer candidates - Century Dodge in Mounty Airy, MD and Koons in Northern Virginia.

Nader at Koons was the best deal but I did not choose them. Century came to within about 1% of the Koons deal. Koons is easily an hour away from me on a very good day and 2+ hours on most days. Given current gas prices and the value of my time for a couple of round trips, it just wasn't worth it. If you live in the DC area and commute, you know what I mean. I've been working with internet wonder Traci at Century for a few weeks now. Traci responded very promptly to all of my e-mail messages. Unlike other dealers, she clearly read them. It turns out her brother is a firefighter also.

I went to Century this morning after my shift and the sales guy Mike took me right in to see the sales manager (Johnny Berry). We all sat down in Johnny's office and he turned his big computer monitor so we could both see the same thing. We went through options and Johnny walked me through the numbers. None of that "I'll be right back" or "Need to check with my manager" crap! I put all my cards on the table with them from the beginning. Johnny came up with a number that wasn't even in the ballpark as mine. It was a good $1,000 off. He very patiently worked through the numbers with me and then I discovered I decided at the last minute to add the safety package since it was now available. My fault but he must have thought I was crazy with the number I told him I had in mind. Johnny had actually given me a half decent number but we somehow missed the affiliate part. Traci was aware of it and I thought Johnny knew but I'm sure he talks to a lot of people. I assumed he knew and that too was my fault. Re-working the numbers put Century in the game but I asked for a few hours to think about it. No pressure at all from Johnny. The order was technically in but it still needed to be approved. I went home, compared the percentage/price differences, and discussed the numbers with my wife. We both decided it was no contest given our distance from Koons. I went back to Century and finished the deal with Mike. Didn't take long at all.

I've bought plenty of vehicles before. I don't enjoy it at all. Short of doing this one over pizza and a beer, I can't imagine a better experience. What a pleasant surprise. Traci and Johnny are class acts.

In a nutshell:
  • If you live in Maryland/DC, contact Traci or Mike at Century Dodge(877) 840-5154. They're your ticket to Johnny. Make sure you let them know if you're a veteran, in the military, or if you're a firefighter or police officer.
  • If you live in Virginia/DC, contact Nader at Koons. I spoke with him and corresponded via e-mail. He is pretty responsive.
  • Get a Chrysler Affiliate number! Do a search in this thread for details.
I'm a firm believer in that everything happens for a reason. I didn't know Century even existed in July when order banks first opened. The safety package wasn't available in July when I was trying to talk to the other dealers. I think I'll like that package so I'm glad things worked out the way they did. I'm still shocked by those other dealers, however.

Now, is it October yet?

Re: 2014 Durango - Features and Changes

..and our situation is still in flux...

Went to check out an Explorer since I can get x-plan from Ford. It wasn't in the running at all.

My wife wanted to go check out the Acadia again and for a couple of reasons she's now leaning that way. Its definitely not my first choice, but I understand its primarily going to be her vehicle. So...

I did finally hear back from my local Dodge dealer with some numbers. He's willing to split the holdback, I countered around 5% under invoice (which is what Koons offered, but they're easily 3 hrs each way). Similar to Fireman if I can get close to that would prefer to get a deal locally for the trip time savings.

Still waiting to hear from a couple of other nearby Dodge dealers.

I think though, that unless the Dodge comes in significantly cheaper the Acadia will win for my wife. Started looking for another 2013 since I think that will definitely be less than the Acadia.

The Acadia used to be on my short list as well. More interior space, interior styling is arguably better. 3rd row seats 3 (vs. 2 in the Durango), and the second row seats are more flexible. My one significant gripe with the Durango is that the 2nd row seats do not adjust fore-aft, so the 2nd row passengers cannot adjust for legroom (for themselves and any 3rd row passengers behind them.

However, since my wife and I are relatively short (I'm 5'8" and my wife is shorter), our front seats will be far enough up to provide decent leg room for the 2nd row.

Ultimately, I chose the Durango for the following reasons:

1) Styling. Matter of taste, but I prefer the Durango exterior styling.

2) Drivetrain. I'm taking a little risk that the 8 speed transmission paired with the Pentastar V-6 turns out to be a winner. I did test drive a '14 Grand Cherokee vs. the Acadia, and preferred the GC, but the Durango is heavier, so still a bit unknown. The Acadia is using essentially the same engine and transmission that it debuted with 6 years ago. I also prefer the rear-wheel bias of the Durango drivetrain vs. FWD bias of Acadia. The V-6 Durango will get better gas milage than the Acadia.

3) Technology. I decided that adaptive cruise control is a must for me, and it's simply not available on the Acadia. The Acadia also lacks some tech that you would think is a given in a vehicle in this class, like touch entry and push-button start. The instrument cluster on the Acadia looks outdated to me, especially compared to the Durango 7" customizable TFT.

Ultimately though, "Happy wife...happy life!" Good luck with your decision.

Re: 2014 Durango - Features and Changes

Just got back from vacation and actually had an Acadia as a rental. We werent really considering it but was going to check it out before we made a final decision. I can now saw I dont have to make a trip to the GMC dealer.

Of course it was a fairly base model but I didn't really care much for the car, especially the seats. They have headrests that can move forward and back headrests. With a 2 year old in the back, he could push the headrests forward with his feet which got quite annoying. In time he learned not to do it, but I could see that being a problem.

The engine was also lacking, but I'm comparing to an R/T. Gas mileage wasn't very good either but I was doing some mountain driving and not completely sure they had the tank filled all the way up.

The stereo, controls, and tech is definitely outdated and no where close to the 2014 Durango.

We didn't even check out the 3rd row seats because before we unloaded our stuff, we had already ruled it out so I can't speak much to the space inside but it did seem a little bigger than the Durango.

If I could change one thing about the Durango it would be have movable second row seats, which the Acadia had. The Acura MDX and Infiniti JX have great designs for movable second row seats too. I'm 6'1" so legroom in the second row is a concern, but 99% of the time our small children will be there so the Durango will work.
