That's my guess too. They (Autoweek) do that a lot - post something and then yank it hours later.

2014 Dodge Durango drive review
A new transmission makes a world of difference

2014 Dodge Durango Photo by: Blake Z. Rong
The model trims are SXT, Limited, R/T and Citadel. V6 models can opt for a Rallye trim. Photo by Blake Z. Rong.

What Is It?

Like Charlton Heston near the end of his career, there's really nothing that relates to the Dodge Durango. It's a proper rootin' tootin' rear-wheel drive SUV while its competition is primarily FWD-based. Chrome and alloys trickle down to the base SXT model, shiny where similarly priced Honda Pilots and Explorers resemble UN peacekeeping vehicles. Its forward-canted grille has the unique ability to frighten children and small dogs. And yeah, just in case you were wondering -- it's got the Hemi. (Chrysler marketers will never live that down with the grace and dignity that they lived down "rich Corinthian leather.")

For 2014, the Durango still keeps its rugged manliness quotient and gets a revised interior to boot, with Uconnect and optional captain's chairs, packing that rich Corinthian leather (on Limited and Citadel trims) Chrysler wishes it hadn't mentioned. The 2014 Durango also receives modest styling upgrades -- including LEDs front and rear, the latter incorporating red-outlined "racetrack" taillights that mimic the Charger's rear and, when viewed in silhouette, vaguely resemble the universal logo for the telephone.

But the big news is an eight-speed automatic, built by ZF, the only option for both V6 and Hemi engines. Dodge maintains that it gets 15 percent better fuel economy than the last six-speed auto. Those eight gears arrive via rotary knob instead of pesky gear lever, snapping into Park or Reverse with a satisfying click. Theoretically, it frees up room in the center console, yet it still takes the same footprint -- but, without a gear lever to get in the way of the cupholders, that qualifies as a victory.

What's It Like To Drive?

In a word, the new eight-speed is excellent: when paired to the Hemi engine it's assertive when it needs to be, smooth when it isn't. We drove up the sort of fiendish, twisty roads that full-sized crossovers have no business being on unless helmed by hapless dads looking for the freeway. Griswold himself would have nodded in acknowledgement. Yet as the elevation grew and the curves unwound, the transmission never hunted for gears, never flustered by our varying throttle inputs. The Hemi 5.7-liter V8 never felt strained.

At 360 hp, we should hope not. (Unsurprisingly it sounds rugged as well, like Heston's Moses. Not terribly intrusive, but always alerting you to its potency.)

The 3.6-liter Pentastar-derived V6 engine is no slouch, either: the eight-speed meshes -- pardon the pun -- more completely with the Hemi, but for the buyer who doesn't need to max out a 7,400-lb tow rating, the V6 has all the power you will ever need. It, too, can tow -- 6,200 lbs worth. Chris-Craft or cabin cruiser? That's for you to decide, friend.

Niggles of the 2014 Durango are slight, but ever so present. There's a surprising amount of wind noise on the freeway. Our mileage, across city and country alike, was 18 with the Hemi. The new digital speedometer squeezes the tachometer, fuel and temperature semicircles embarrassingly into the corners -- with the trip computer on, reading mph takes a moment to decipher. The digital speedometer makes things clearer, but it is -- no joke -- the same tall, gray numbering used on a slew of schlocky action movie posters, especially "2012." The 2014 Dodge Durango: ready for anything John Cusack throws at it!

Do I Want One?

Dodge's cabal of Durango men made a hullabaloo of the Durango's seven-seat practicality, its 25-mpg Hemi highway rating, its supple new interior. But in the end, it comes down to the styling -- little has changed since 2011, but it didn't need to. In R/T guise (or Rallye, if one springs for the V6; it also adds 5 more hp) it looks positively mean, a bruiser against the bovine. If that's your style, then the Durango won't steer you wrong.

Is the USB port inside the center console an audio input for an iPod or just a charging port?

I assume (which, you know, means ASS out of U and ME ) that it was both. Oddly both the owners manual and the user guide are silent on this fact.

It's also, maddeningly, silent as to whether the various USB ports will charge tablets or not (higher amp requirement than an iPhone/iPod).

Re: 2014 Durango - Features and Changes

Thanks for the cached story from Autoweek. It is surprising to read they complained about wind noise. For the price, it should be very quiet.

We went yesterday to a dealer with several in stock. He did not have a V8 in stock, and we needed to get going to an apartment association meeting, so did not drive any of them. We sat in a Limited and a Citadel. Here are our initial impressions (we will be at the OC Auto Show on opening day, opening hour, so will be able to spend more time without hovering sales men and without crowds):

1) The black upper interior is a real put-off to us - why such a dark cave?
2) Unlike the 2013 Grand Cherokee I rented in May in Texas, the seats adjust in more ways, with separate adjustments for up and down on the front and back of the seat bottom.
3) The leather in the Citadel is supposed to be the best, but it felt cheap, like vinyl on the doors.
4) My wife, who has long legs, wanted the bottom seat cushions to be longer.
5) The navigation video display has greater vertical height than width, as if it is turned 90 degrees from the normal orientation.

Re: 2014 Durango - Features and Changes

As far as the charging, don't forget there is a 115v (150 watts/13amp max) plug in on the front console under the HVAC controls in most models. I recall from training that the USB ports are 2.3 amps. Can't verify it, but that number is sticking in my head.

Good deal, and thanks for the info.

Also, thanks for all that you're doing to support the Jeep/Durango community in general. I'm certain that the information you provide will be useful to all of us as we enter ownership of what looks to be an incredible vehicle platform.

It is all much appreciated by yours truly.

I second Dave's thanks, Will. This forum has been enlightening and very educational, and I look forward to this resource as I try to negotiate my way through the highs, and any potential lows, of the new Durango.
