2014 v6 8-speed vs 2013 5-speed

First off I would like to thank everyone on this forum, I haven't had to post since I was able to find most of the answers I was looking for on here.

Now to the topic at hand. I am debating between a 2013 and the 2014, mainly because I can save several thousand on a 2013. My main questions is to those who have drove both the 5 speed and 8 speed v6 equipped Durangos, is there a big difference in how the drive and is it worth the extra? I plan on driving a 2014 as well (we test drove a 2013 last night) but wanted some expert opinions

I don't remember a big difference in drive feel between the 13/14. The money you save is basically the money the car loses in value right away due to the model year design change. It really comes down to your finances, and with what you're comfortable spending. You will save in gas over the life of the car with the 8 speed, and the creature comforts of the Uconnect 2 are a big advancement over the previous generation. If you know you're going to get upset each time you see those racetrack lights go by you as you sit in your 13, then there is no question. If it's something you're ok with and you'd rather save the money now vs have a bigger return on your car at trade in or sell time, then buy a 13.

My decision process was, I like the new look (led headlamps, racetrack rear), I liked the new interior (8" Uconect 2, 7" EVIC dash), and I didn't want to immediately feel that the brand new car I just bought was already outdated. If I was going used obviously that is something you just accept.

I don't know if any of that helps you, but good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I'd echo most of what Gtaz has said.

I specifically had us wait (the Durango is my wife's vehicle) because of the overall changes (UConnect 8.4, 8 speed transmission, improved interior layout).

The drive characteristic is similar, but the fuel economy with the 8 speed has been quite good, and out of ECO mode or using the paddle shifters (not available on the '13s) I find it to be quite responsive.

Step off is a little hesitant for my taste, but I think part of that is I haven't driven it enough to get used to the throttle tip in. When my wife drives I don't notice it. I think given the push for increased fuel mileage we're going to see transmissions upshifting much faster/sooner than ever. I noticed similar behavior in both the Explorer and Acadia we test drove.

Again, the paddles give you an extra level of control.

I appreciate the replies and yes they are helpful. The feature and styling updates don't matter that much to me. I also plan to keep the vehicle for a while so resale isn't a hug issue either. It comes down to the transmission and fuel economy for me, if there is a big difference in either it would be worth the extra.

This will be my wife's vehicle as well. We are upgrading from a 2007 Impala mainly for the room for our family. Will miss the Impala's 30 mpg however.

From what I have seen the economy with the 8 speed seems to be quite a bit better. Has anyone directly compared the 13 to the 14 as far as an average goes?

I'm not sure about the Durango since I am a jeep owner. However I bought a 2014 after test driving both - in the jeep at least the vehicle is more responsive and accelerates better - it also seems to pass at highway speeds with a lot less "sturm und drang"! in fact I have read anecdotal evidence that the v-6 with the 8 speed is very close in performance to the 5.7 and 5/6 speed... probably due to the computer choking the v8 to meet emissions standards...

I had an 11 Durango and the drivability is MUCH improved IMHO. Theres no lull...or void during daily driving while shifting. No rough or delayed shifts and when accelerating its smooth with ultra quick shifts. The 5 speed seemed to always be in a dead spot when you needed it most.

Scott, how come you never mention your Durango in your signature? Does it embarrass you? I mean you do have the Fiat there...

Far from scientific, but TFL ran 0-60 on both.

2014:
2013:

2014 was 9.71 (at altitude) and 2013 was 10.82 (at altitude). They say cut about 1 second off to get sea level numbers.

Either way, roughly a full second quicker to 60 for the '14 is a significant improvement. Couple that with the fuel economy and interior upgrades - the 2014 is a slam dunk!

Yeah, on reflection I do seem to recall feeling this way. The 8 speed (we have the V-6) is more responsive once up to speed. It does feel a little "laggy" to me from a dead stop, but see my earlier comments about not having much seat time to get used to it. Taking it out of the default ECO mode definitely makes a difference.

The multi speed transmissions are so different than the 4 speed and even 5 speed 'boxes most of us are used to. It takes some adjusting to get used to them.

we haven't owned the Durango for about 7 months now. Traded it for the Rubicon 10a. I have a build thread in the Durango forum. I was the first to add the brembo srt brakes, oem HID headlmaps etc. I think I was the only durnago owner here for awhile...LOL.

Thanks for all the quick responses and info. We are hopefully going to test drive a 2014 this morning and make our decision from there. If we do go with a the 2014 I will most like to wait till later next year before buying so the budget looks better

My thoughts of the 5 speed echoed what several reviews had said about having to get in the throttle pretty far before a downshift and then the engine came alive. After that it had plenty of power. My wife said I was just too used to my EFI Live tuned Duramax lol.

I will post my impression of the 8 speed as well. Thanks again.
