Durango - Best Full Size SUV - Texas Auto Writers

The Durango was declared the best full size SUV by the Texas Auto Writers Association.

RAM trucks, Jeep and Chrylser technology took a significant number of "bests"

Nice find.

This is another opportunity to bring up "what defines a vehicle as an SUV vs. a CUV?" For example, they consider the 2014 Pathfinder a full size CUV, while the Durango is considered a full size SUV.

I myself see these two as direct competitors in the same vehicle class. The only notable difference (drivetrain / chassis) is that the Durango is real-wheel drive biased, whereas the Pathfinder is FWD biased. Both are unibody construction AFAIK.

In my mind, an SUV typically means "body on frame" construction. But I also accept the "specifically designed for at least limited off-road" capability.

So I can see how the Jeep Grand Cherokee can be classed as an SUV (designed tohandle off-road), where the Durango would be a crossover (designed for street), even though they are on the same platform. (This is how I see them.)

Maybe the fact that the Durango is offered with 4WD Lo (with the Hemi) put the Durango in the SUV class?

I wondered the same thing myself. Unfortunately even the TAWA site doesn't offer any real additional detail. Not sure how they made the distinctions.

Well by that definition (Body on Frame), every Jeep with the exception of the Wrangler, is a CUV.

Me, personally... drive orientation. N-S engine/transmission is an SUV, E-W is a crossover, or CUV.

Never thought about it that way, but it makes complete sense to me to look at it that way. Excellent point.

Well, I did say that either body on frame or "specifically designed for off-road capability." For me, any drivetrain or suspension design for off-roading qualifies it as an SUV.

So to me, all Jeeps would pretty much fall into SUV category. However, the Durango, even though it is based on the same platform as the GC, would be a crossover.

That's an interesting take. That would make the Durango an SUV (as Truck Trend classifies it.) I personally see the Durango as a Crossover though. (and I see the Jeeps as SUVs).

I would suggest that, although exceptions do exist, the difference between an SUV and a CUV is easily distinguished by observing the driver.

If they are wandering all over the road with a cellphone stuck up their ***, it is a CUV.

If they are paying attention to the road and traffic and driving conditions, it is an SUV. ...unless it is hot pink.

Nice, real nice (true though it may be). Of course in the age of BT there is no need to stick the phone....oh never mind.
