Re: Durango Lives On (Refresh Coming for '17)

It still doesn't make any sense why Dodge would announce a Jan. 2017 "mid-cycle refresh" of the Durango, roll out the Wagoneer in 3Q 2018, and then axe the Durango just like that. Previous rumors were that 2015 would be the Durango's last year; yet it now lives on . . . for what purpose & for how long?

Why would Fiat-Chrysler eliminate a Dodge SUV that has a large appeal among the younger crowd and has some middle class affordability, to substitute a high end SUV that looks like it'll be starting at 45-50K, and will be competing against other high end SUVs that have monthly sales numbers mostly less or no higher than what the Durango's currently monthly sales are. And while the Jeep brand sells a lot more Jeeps than the Durango, it doesn't break out the sales numbers for the Overland and Summit models, which would be the comparable price points for a Wagoneer. Once you hit that level, the mkt shrinks significantly.

Last month in this forum, in an April 10th post, Milous quoted a recent March 2014 Motor Trend article that was paraphrasing a discussion with Jeep Chief Mike Manley & which stated in part that "'The Jeep Grand Wagoneer is expected to share its stretched chassis with the Dodge Durango . . . .'"

Also, a May 1st article by Kelly Blue Book discusses a recent interview with Mike Manley about the new Wagoneer in which it's stated: "The [Jeep] division is looking to expand production capacity and it's been reported that the FCA is looking at expanding the Sterling Heights, Michigan, which produces the Chrysler 200, to add a line for Jeep and Dodge Durango."

Fiat Chrysler also recently stated, in announcing its five year plan, that several models would die, including the Grand Caravan minivan, with the arrival of the Chrysler Town and Country in 2016, and the Avenger in 2014. There was no dying announcement for the Durango.

I "Trust in Milous," but given the facts, my uneducated guess is that while Fiat-Chrysler may intend (or may have intended) to axe the Durango, it first wants to see sales numbers for the Wagoneer.

Milous has product planning documents that all the magazines and online rags do not have access too. Hell most at FCA don't have access to these documents. Canceling a vehicle takes a year or so advanced notice. ...but developing/planning/executing the next gen of a model takes 3-5 years plus. The Durango has a little more wiggle room as its mechanically similar to the WK2. The plan 6 months ago was to ax the Durango on the jeep and move it to a cuv platform to replace the caravan.
Don't get me wrong..mi love the Durango and want them to keep it....BUT only of they can add capacity to JNAP to.produce the WK2 at its worldwide demand. Why take capacity away from your cash cow to build for dodge? Doesn't make sense at current times. The Durango averages 4-5500k per month in sales. ...add that number to the WK2 sales and the WK2 is a HUGE HUGE winner in the suv segment even more so than now.L Then in 18-19...add the WS to the table at JNAP....which model will win out? WS or WD?

Re: Durango Lives On (Refresh Coming for '17)

Scott, I've said many times that there is still some additional capacity at JNAP.

Moving the Durango to a different platform isn't necessary. We can keep building both.

Then why do all the higher ups keep saying they don't have the capacity at JNAP. It's in every article about the wk2. Sergio himself has said it many times. Why does it take so long to fill orders here and overseas?

I don't know why they keep saying that. It's false.

I will say that running us the way we are now is CHEAPER than a traditional work schedule.

So, it looks to me like they are just being CHEAP.

Sorry...not doubting you...I just don't see it with the production now and how they're turning away customers overseas.

There has been a few situations that backed everything up... Maybe in a perfect world they could do more but we seen a month and a half of build get piled up again recently.

So maybe the capacity issue is based on the average completed output not theoretical capacity.

We are also having other internal issues that I don't think I should be talking about. They are hurting production. (Not employee related by any means)

Yes I am aware of some things... Probably not all but I think of course they look at the average on the year regardless of why.

There will always be "things"

Re: Durango Lives On (Refresh Coming for '17)

It will surely be interesting to see how "the plan" plays out over the next several years. Like others, I see what appears to be rather "conflicting" things in the plan as it relates to the WD / WK2 platform.

Most specifically...

A refresh of the Grand Cherokee is on the Jeep roadmap for late 2015 / early 2016, and a refresh of the Durango in 2017.

Then...all new Grand Cherokee in 2017?

Chrysler's "full size crossover" also scheduled for 2017.

Grand Wagoneer for 2018?

It is hard to imagine that all of these models will be built on the same platform and same manufacturing plant, not just because of the huge volume targets for Jeep, but because of how the refresh / new model schedules are currently laid out.

The demise of the Grand Caravan does make for an interesting gap. This appears to leave ChryCo without a "cheap" large utilitarian people and stuff mover. They are either going to have to offer cheaper trim levels / options on the Town and Country to draw the Grand Caravan buyers to Chrysler...or they will need to steer them to either the Durango or Chrysler full size crossover.

That does seem to suggest that a "new Durango" may be targeted for a CUV platform, rather than the current SUV platform, to possibly appeal more to the Caravan buyer.

Speaking of the 5 year plan...I think the biggest challenge I see is repositioning the Chrysler brand. It seems like they want the "new Chrysler" to take the place of the "old Plymouth." I like the idea of where they want to go:

1 "Performance" brand (Dodge + SRT)
1 "Off Road" brand (Jeep)
1 "Truck" brand (Ram)
1 "Mass Market" brand (Chrysler)

ChryCo has worked for the past several years to try and position Chrysler as a "near luxury" brand, and it will be tough, IMO, to successfully reverse course.

Re: Durango Lives On (Refresh Coming for '17)

I will say one thing - all of the future product announcements (and not just from FCA) have me seriously considering delaying my next vehicle purchase beyond the late 2015/mid-2016 time frame.

Part of me wants to wait and see the next iteration of the Charger, the coming AWD Dart SRT, and even the Journey. I'm already considering the new 200. And those are just the FCA products on the list of potentials...

The only other auto manufacturer seriously on the list is a many branded German company...

Question is - how long to I want to stretch a nearly 10 year old body on frame SUV with 115k miles.

What to do, what to do???
