Durango vs. Grand Cherokee

Don't see a lot of activity in this section, but hoping I can get some good feedback. My wife and I love our Grand Cherokee, but she wants more seats. I've argued over and over we are a family of 4 and additional seating is not necessary just to have it when family or friends want to take a single vehicle. I don't mind being the driver, but my family and hers don't offer gas money unless I beat it out of them and I'd rather not give them more of an excuse to add miles/wear-n-tear to my vehicle when going somewhere as a group.

With my venting out the way, I have to honestly come up with more than that to convince my wife otherwise. My question is other than the extra row of seating, is the Durango worth while upgrading to from our JGC? I know they're built on the same platform and lines, but how does the interior build compare? If I'm replacing the Overland, does the Citadel match the build? How does the shift knob compare to a regular and how's the ride? I'm looking for comparisons like this to help with the final judgement

I'll be honest, we have the 4x4, but it's not used nearly as much as it should, so I could settle for the AWD Durango. I would miss the air ride and I've been eyeballing the SRT's lately, but I'm curious as to how the Durango SRT will turnout. I kind of think that would be enough to push me over the edge. So far, rumors on pricing for the Wagoneer puts it out of my reach, but that may be an option too.

I will continue to research this, but looking for those who have or owned both at some point for some pointers.

Re: Durango vs. Grand Cherokee

I've owned both....and the materials quality and styling of the durango is not up to par with the GC. And in my experience...the rear 3rd seats are not comfortable at all. Maybe for very small kids...but imho they would grow weary that far from adults etc. Some people swear by them.

Re: Durango vs. Grand Cherokee

One thing to consider with 2 kids. Your kids will have friends and there will be times when you are taking their friends places. It happens with us a lot.

With that being said, if I had only two kids I'd probably get the GC over the D

Re: Durango vs. Grand Cherokee

If your kids are older, GC will be enough. I have a 1 and 4 yr old, so we are still using a double stroller and gear in our 2016 Durango now. After they get older we will dump the Durango for something smaller. Durango " feels" big when driving it.

I had a 2013 GC but trunk wasn't big enough for day at the zoo.

Drop in at dodgedurango.net .. you'll find lots of owners there..

When my daughter was in her road-warrior days, she rented a lot of WDs and WK2s.. she said she really didn't feel a difference in size between the two.. Then again, her current two vehicles are a Honda Fit and a 2002 Yukon Denali.. so maybe her calibration is a bit different than most

Re: Durango vs. Grand Cherokee

I couldn't stand the interior in the Durango. It looks so cheap. The exterior is meh at best. The citadel doesn't look all that high end. I always see one dropping my son off at school and always think it's a Limited or whatever at first. Then I'm like oh yeah citadel, guess it is the nice one lol doesn't look like it...

Everything feels cheap and thin compared to the GC

Re: Durango vs. Grand Cherokee

Traded my 2014 JGC limited lux II HEMI. For a 2016 Durango R/T blacktop. Couldn't disagree more with the prior posts. The Durango feels like basically the same vehicle with a dodge badge and a third row of seats. It handles better on road due to lower ride height and suspension tuning for the road. Everything feels basically the same steering wheel every button etc etc it is literally the same exact car it's somewhat spooky. Exterior styling is subjective The R/T Blacktop is pretty mean looking.

Agree with you on most points too. We have a 2016 R/T and the lowered firmer suspension does help. But it still "feels" big. Plus looking at overall dimensions through edmunds.com... Durango is over a foot longer, a little taller, but GC is a tad wider. And I'm not even comparing curb weights.

Re: Durango vs. Grand Cherokee

I get beat up (in jest) on dodgedurango for owning (two) GCs.. but I still provide tech support for Gen-I Durangos so they let me hang around

Seriously, be careful when casting aspersions on the Durango.. it's been through a lot.. from the Gen-I Dakota-based workhorse SUV, to the Gen-II what-Daimler-and-Cerberus-thought-would-be-an-awesome-SUV, to the Gen-III WD which has evolved into quite a nice niche.. the "7-passenger Charger" FWIW..

Re: Durango vs. Grand Cherokee

tomk,
My wife and I have zero complaints about out Durango. It's doing the job we purchased it for.
And we love the looks of the R/T, especially the rear end!

Re: Durango vs. Grand Cherokee

Yeah. It's kind of absurd to exclaim that there's a such a huuuuge difference between the the D and and the GC. Same seats, same infotainment, same engine, same tranny, roll down the same line, etc...I have no bias as I see them as pretty much same vehicle marketed to two different demographics.
