External HD

As anyone connected an external Hard drive to their USB port? If so can you keep the music organized into folders by artist then album(current set up) or do you have to bring them all to the main folder? I was looking at purchasing a 2tb hd just for my D. I was a dj a few years back all my music is legit... Don't worry.

Re: External HD

I understand the Durango's system is basically the same as the Grand Cherokees.
If so, then I know of some that have 500GB dries connected.

Simple file system: Artist / Album / Songs.

What I want to do is put my entire music library in my D. What would be the easiest way to do this

Re: External HD

Simply copy them across.

I suggest you copy the first 10 to make sure it works as you want then the rest.

Re: External HD

I have had a back-and-forth communication going on with Chrysler Help on this subject, trying to figure out if any external drive other than a USB Thumb Drive (Stick) will work -- among other questions.

And, apparently, it will.
If it does not require more than 500mA to operate.

Here is part of their official answer:
USB devices (e.g., camera memory USB adaptors, etc.) must comply with the MSD (Mass Storage Device) standard. This USB terminal can provide power to the inserted device. The device's current limitation must be less or equal to 500mA. -- My Note: My existing WD 'My Passport' only uses about half that, but is USB 3.0 equipped. There are ways to test the mA draw on your units (if your documentation does not tell you) by seeking out USB View on the Web. You simply plug in the device and launch this small utility -- nothing to install and no complicated setup.

The transfer speed for this USB connector is approximately two megabytes per second. --
My Note: So USB 3.0 doesn't help in any way, other than the speed of copying to the portable drive off your computer (if your computer is equipped with 3.0 ports).

MP3 player devices cannot be controlled through the USB connector. Some player devices save music files in MP4 format, which cannot be played in this radio. Some copy protected music (e.g., downloads from the internet) cannot be played on this radio. --
My Note: The only reliable formats they mentioned are MP3 and WMA (personal experience says only version 9 or ver 9 Lossless responds -- not version 10). But I could not get a clear answer on any other formats being supported. As you can see, they specifically say MP4 is NOT supported. Others might be able to confirm Apple formats. FLAC is NOT supported.

Hope this helps. Having said all that, an external Drive of the sort you mention might be massive overkill as there are 128GB USB Thumb Drives that require a lot less power. But maybe you have a massive Library of music that exceeds this. I found a 128GB USB 3.0 PNY Thumb Drive on Amazon for around $60. Anything above that capacity skyrockets in price. As was pointed out elsewhere here on the Forum, your entire Library might fit on a much smaller-sized thumb drive, depending on the formats used.
