Getting tired of my 1st to 2nd gear clunk when coasting

When coasting down a slight inline usually a parking lot, parking garage, my street I get harsh shifts when it goes into 2nd gear. It varies from a slight clunk to feeling like i've been rear ended. Only happens when coasting downhill and when the engine is cold, if I have the slightest throttle input it's smooth as expected.

The GC has had multiple tranny updates to address this issue among many others. The latest one was Dec. 18th for V6 models built before Nov. 12th but after contacting Chrysler it's not compatible with the Durango even though they share the same hardware.

Just wanted to vent as I'm getting sick of this behavior. Also frustrated we don't have a good source for TSB/RRTs. I keep an eye on wk2jeeps but they aren't going to post a Durango only TSB. We only get lucky if the D is lumped together with a common issue across the line for GC. I've resorted to calling my dealer once a month to run my VIN in hopes a tranny update will pop up someday. Once this is fixed then it will be near perfect.

Re: Getting tired of my 1st to 2nd gear clunk when coasting

Interesting -

I don't think we've experienced this one - at least I haven't and we were in parking garage last week.

Ours is an October build (10/1) with the V6. I'll have to pay better attention the next time I drive it, but my wife is usually pretty good about pointing out annoyances like this.

I can't imagine there'd be a Citadel (you) to Limited (us) difference in the programming either.

Re: Getting tired of my 1st to 2nd gear clunk when coasting

I also have not noticed that problem. I have a Limited v6 built in December.

I have noticed other weird transmission behaviors though. When it is cold, sometimes it hangs onto 5th gear for too long. I was cruising with just enough gas to maintain speed and I was at 3k RPM in 5th. The only way to get it to upshift was to take my foot completely off the gas. It has done this twice and is hard to get it to repeat the behavior. I have also noticed after accelerating quickly, if you take your foot off the gas it hangs onto the gear for awhile like it would on a manual if you didn't push the clutch. My old Tahoe would upshift as soon as I took my foot off the gas and the RPMs would drop.

Also, in my opinion, eco mode is not even usable. Being in 8th gear at 30mph is a little ridiculous. I have also found a hesitation if needing to accelearte quickly from a roll. Taking it out of eco makes it drive and shift like I think it should. I would love the ability to have the previous setting remembered too. Kind of annoying to always push the eco button at startup.

Bottom line, I think the shift logic can be cleaned up a bit. Not sure if these are "issues" or just quirks to an 8 speed transmission. I know everytime I will take it into the dealer I will ask them to scan for updated PCM code.

Spoke too soon, just got the second to first clunk today. Noticeable, but not terrible.

I have been trying to give eco mode a shot again. Not sure if it is related, but I was in eco mode when this happened. I have not noticed the clunk outside of eco mode.

My r/t with the HEMI seems fine. Also, not noticed the eco mode issues with the HEMI that everyone is talking about.

Maybe because the Hemi has the ZF built 8hp70 vs the Pentastar which are running the Chrysler built ZF licensed 845hp. Wonder is ZF helped with the mapping on those more? Or different components?
The JGC Diesel is also running the 8hp70 built by ZF and no complaints from those owners yet on transmission shifting issues.

Could be the case. For the GC I see 4 updates for the V6 845RE, 1 for the Diesel 8HP70 and none for the 5.6L 8HP70. Maybe the different transfer cases come into play too. You can read all about the transmission specs/details here:

Re: Getting tired of my 1st to 2nd gear clunk when coasting

Happy to report my tranny stopped doing the rough shifts from 1st to 2nd when coasting down a slight hill. It's been a couple weeks now and all is good. I guess the learning algorithm finally kicked in, I'm at about 3,500 miles now.

Re: Getting tired of my 1st to 2nd gear clunk when coasting

I'm quite familiar with the 'clunk'. Had it from the beginning. I just hit 12,000 miles and am pleased to say I haven't heard the clunk for quite a while. Other than an oil change, tire rotation, and driving the heck out of it, I didn't do anything to make the noise go away.

We haven't experienced this, but wow, Fireman, a ton of miles!!

We're about mid-5k range. Hopefully a bunch of your miles was trekking north with trailer and snowmobile in tow. I'm guessing conditions in the ADKs were fantastic this winter.

A ton of miles indeed. I have a solid 60 mile round trip commute each day for work. Taking delivery at the beginning of October, commuting to/from work has added about 7,000 miles alone! I'm happy to report that those miles have been totally trouble free!

Conditions were outstanding in NY for snowmobiling this year... but I'm sad to report I didn't get a single chance to try out the long range towing capability of the D.
