Looked at New Durango and New Explorer

Got a chance last weekend to look at these two. Dealer had a new Durango Citadel sitting beside a new GC. Interiors are identical - gauges, seats, leather, everything from what I could tell. Not to sure on the exterior for the Durango though - I liked it in the pics but in person it looks "bloated". Maybe the R/T will make it more sporty, but if I had to choose between the two, the GC would be the way to go, although I do like the added room with the 3rd row seating. I had heard rumors recently of Jeep maybe resurrecting the Grand Wagoneer which would be a stretched GC on the Durango frame - guess we will have to wait and see.

On to the Explorer - although better looking than the last model, this thing is VERY cheap looking inside as compared to the GC/ Durango - even my 2010 looks nicer. The second row of seats were buckets which I could not believe - the console between them did not look like it would convert into a bench. Sorry, but this thing resembled more of a minivan that a SUV/ cross-over. Was not impressed whatsoever...

Saw the explorer in person last week... don't like how big it is or how it doesn't resemble that whole "truck" thing aka minivan

Re: Looked at New Durango and New Explorer

I was torn between the GC, Durango, and Explorer. I was impressed with the new Explorer until I saw it in person. I can't put my finger on it, but something doesn't look right. Even the top of the line versions don't have an expensive look to the interior. The exterior looks better online than in person. I will say the gadgets are nice though. Such as:

1) A much nicer nav system. Its glitchy and fixes are being rolled out frequently, but at least Ford is aware of the problem and is making an active attempt to fix it. Updates are also easy to get and you don't have to bug the dealer to get it.(Jeep dealers just replace the entire radio when its needs software updates)Overall, its got a bigger display, integrates well with the gauge cluster, has a nice resolution, and an overall more comprehensive navigation package.

2) Folding power mirrors.

3) Power folding rear seats (this may be a bad thing since it takes a lot longer to fold them and its one more motor to wear out)

4) Can change ambient color.

As for my driving impressions, the Explorer seemed like there was no steering input, has bigger blind spots, and the exterior mirrors are much smaller than the GC and Durango's. The navigation, while being fun to play with in the parking lot, was distracting while driving, since your fingers are looking for virtual buttons instead of buttons with some tactile feedback. There aren't any physical buttons for things like the heated and ventilated seats. I was also dissapointed in the panoroof on the Explorer. It has a headliner between the two panes making it seem more like a dual sunroof option rather than the more impressive pano roof on the GC.

In the end, I ended up getting a GC.

The Ford is more crossover like than anything else.

Re: Looked at New Durango and New Explorer

No more V8 for the Exploder and base engine is a 4cyl WTF. I think in the reviews they claimed that ford now classifies it as a crossover.

Its front wheel drive and based off the Taurus chassis. Definately a crossover by any definition.

Re: Looked at New Durango and New Explorer

The base engine isn't a 4-banger. Base is 3.5 Duratec. 4 ecoboost is optional (mo $), barely gets better MPG, and is much slower (MotorTrend hated it, but they pretty much hate the new Explorer in general). I've seen 0-60 times of the V6 in 7.5 secs -- which is pretty much identical to the Hemi GC or Durango. Not too shabby for get up and go.
