Parent's 2014 Durango died while driving twice- ideas?

My parents purchased a brand new 2014 2wd 3.6L Durango Citadel approx 6mths ago to drive while they toured the US. It has 9k miles on it and while driving from Texas to florida this past week, it died without provocation. They were traveling with cruise and ACC set when the motor suddenly quit. They still had power steering and were able to safely get off to the shoulder. Multiple times they tried to start it but were unsuccessful. AAA gave them a tow to the nearest dealership and when there, it started without issue. Mopar ran diagnostics but were unable to find any issues, they went ahead and did some TSB/software updates and sent them on their way. During the week there were no issues to be had and the Dodge performed as expected. Yesterday, while driving back to Texas, it again died in the same manner as earlier in the week. Due to it being saturday and later in the afternoon, they are now stuck in Tallahassee and have to wait until monday to have the vehicle looked at. Just like previously, after a while the vehicle starts up without issue.

I have searched the boards but no reported issues, vehicle is only serviced at the dealership. Just wanting to see if any of y'all could help identify a cause or have had similar experience.

Thanks!

I have F250 deisel 7L and it did that when it was pretty new. Ford guy couldn't find anything. Independent mechanic said it was the TDCD (top dead center detector) and he replaced it. No problems since. 4 or so years late, FOrd sent a recall to fix it.

See if you can get the build date from the driver's door ("MDH" code).

There have been various minor issues that have come up, but without knowing when it was built it's hard to see if any of those are relevant.

TIPM. Isn't that the common fix for random deaths?

TIPM = Totally Integrated Power Module for those that don't know the acronyms.

Might be a possible cause for sure...

IIRC the TIPM problem only runs thru MY13.

Like a problem is baised. Nothing would surprise me on these platforms (WD/WK2). Love them, but they are not noted for being problem-free.

Re: Parent's 2014 Durango died while driving twice- ideas?

The electrical architecture changed in '14, and the TIPM went away,.

Of course, there are electrical gremlins in the '14s and '15s.. need the build date to narrow down the possibilities tho..

Re: Parent's 2014 Durango died while driving twice- ideas?

Since the problem seems to be temperature related (doesn´t start after the stall, but after a while it will), it could well be a problem with the crank position sensor.

Re: Parent's 2014 Durango died while driving twice- ideas?

There was a TSB for the cam sensor. I had mine replaced. However, this was due to "long crank times" not "deaths".

Re: Parent's 2014 Durango died while driving twice- ideas?

Sorry for the delayed update... Dodge seems to think its related to a failed relay that tells the fuel to switch tanks when the one side/tank gets low. When the vehicle is lifted/towed that fuel was sloshed around and then was able to be restarted. This is why the vehicle would suddenly die but still maintain power. Funny, shortly after they got back home they received a TSB for 11-13 Jeep GCs/Dodge Durangos for the TIPM which describes the exact same problems that they experienced. Makes one wonder even though the TIPM went away in the 14-15s as stated by tomk....
