Thumbs up The Durango may live past 2016.....BUT

on a FWD/crossover/minivan platform used for the next Chrysler minivan. The Dodge minivan will not live on....so the Durango can slide in there as a crossover and be built on the same lines as the Chrysler minivan. Keeps the Durango namesake living on.

Thoughts?

I sure hope the Durango stays a copy/clone of the WK2.

Boo hiss! A Durango is NOT a crossover. They need to find a new name or risk sinking whatever cachet the name currently has.

Why not just call it the Caravan and be done with it. I wonder what this means for the future of the Journey.

Re: The Durango may live past 2016.....BUT

From the front and rear the Durango is awesome but from the side it has a long mini-vanesque stature. Plus this is going to free up room at JNAP I presume for the Wagoneer? Or is the Wagoneer going to be built somewhere else? Either way, I hope the Durango keeps its strong appearance.

That doesn't make sense. They're getting rid of one of the minivans to avoid overlap of brands. They're not going to do that only to make the Durango the new overlap.

And it already is a crossover.

They are getting rid of the Dodge minivan because it doesn't sell well. The durango currently is not a crossover. It's not built on a car platform nor fwd based. The next chrysler minivan will be built on the LA (I think) car platform modified for the van. It's the same platform the challenger, next SRT barracuda/avenger. ..whatever they call it...300, charger etc. Will be built on.

Re: The Durango may live past 2016.....BUT

I think the reason the Chrysler minivans aren't selling well is they're ugly as sin. We went on a long road trip (and our 2008 Jeep SRT8 road like a garbage truck), and we rented a mini van. I couldn't even stand to rent one for 10 days so I paid extra for the "luxury" option, a Toyota Sienna. Completely in a different class. We now just picked up a '14 AWD Citadel, which will now be our road trip vehicle. Oh, and this is my first post.

Re: The Durango may live past 2016.....BUT

Wow, that would be a bad idea.

On one hand, I already have my Durango, and it is exactly what I want, so I don't necessarily care.

As a critic of the business decision, however, I think it would be a bad call. Launching a car based Durango crossover does three things: 1. it kills the relatively successful (see Canada Sales) Dodge Journey, likely replacing it with a unit too big for that market, 2.) It kills the prospects for any meaningful volume of the planned Jeep Grand Wagoneer and 3. It drops Dodge right in the center of the competitive pig-pile of FWD based crossovers (Explorer, Highlander, Pilot, Acadia) - a battle which a Dodge vehicle will not win.

The Durango currently fills a niche not well addressed by the competition: I need 3 complete rows of space. I need AWD. I need to tow - no FWD car based architecture. If I were willing to concede on any of these points, then I would have been shopping for an Explorer, Highlander, Pilot or Acadia.

A better strategy would be to just drop the Durango and replace with a Jeep Grand Wagoneer. All it needs is the same 4WD options as the WK2 and Jeep styling. Done. I would have paid more for one.

1....it does nothing to the journey...much smaller cuv. The journey is getting ready to be revised too. This would be a larger cuv to compete with the larger cuv market where chrysler has nothing.

2...The current durango is not a big seller without incentives etc. This move makes room for more production of grand Cherokees at jnap. The grand Wagoner will move into the 3 row market starting right at the summit price range.

Do you have any more details about the Wagoneer at this point?
