Changing Summit wheels with 18" Sahara wheels

I started talking about this topic on another thread and did not want to steal the original thread so figured I would start a new one. I have a 2014 Grand Cherokee Summit with the 20" factory wheels and tires. These wheels are great looking and will use here in Houston for everyday driving. We have Colorado property and I will take the Jeep several times a year to our property. I want another set of wheels and tires to have for Colorado and off-roading while we are there in the mountains. I had some responses from the other thread that the 18" wheels and tires from a Wrangler Sahara would swap out with no issues. I have found a couple sets here on Craigslist that are reasonably priced. One is the Polar Edition (like the Sparkle Silver wheel) except most of the wheel is painted black. The other set is the Sparkle Silver ones but couple hundred dollars more. Has anyone did this swap??? No problems with larger diameter tires? The other question, according to the specs on both 18" and my 20", the 18" will probably be about 2" in diameter larger than my 20" ones. Is there a setting you can change tire diameter from the settings on the dash? If not, would it affect anything except speedo being off? I appreciate any input before I pull the trigger on buying these wheels...

Re: Changing Summit wheels with 18" Sahara wheels

Looks like the wheel swap was a success. I ended up buying a set of wheels that came off a 2014 Sahara Wrangler Limited. These are the premium 6 spoke polished aluminum wheels. I really liked them better than the wheels with the round slots. Anyway, tires only had about 50 miles on them, perfect shape and gave the guy $900 for all 5. The tires are the Bridgestone Dueler AT. Pulled the 20" wheels off my 2014 Summit and installed the new wheels. The fit was very good and only close place is in the rear tire weld. It is snug there with being almost 2" larger in diameter. Took the Jeep out for a test drive and just a tiny bit more road noise but not enough to be concerned on a long trip. Will head by Discount Tire this afternoon to install the TPMS sensors in each wheel and re-balance. The spare also fitted in the back compartment although I removed the two tire trays that sit inside the compartment.. I am very pleased with the swap for my off roading in Colorado.
thanks

Would you mind posting up some pictures?

I'm thinking of doing the same thing for an 'off-highway' setup.

TIA

Re: Changing Summit wheels with 18" Sahara wheels

No problem on posting some pictures. However the Jeep is in the shop right now. I will get some once I get it out (hopefully today).. They do fill out the wheel welds and look good to me. They also will not touch anywhere riding in park mode as well....

Thanks for being the lab rat!
I have been wanting to get Sahara wheels as well with Sahara tire size. I will do so now without worry.
Anyone know if the speedo is capable of recalibration?
Second question, did these wheels bring the tire closer or further away from the upper strut. I'd love to be able to fit some mild tire chains.

Re: Changing Summit wheels with 18" Sahara wheels

I am just finishing up on the tow hook lugs I installed but did snap a picture with the cell phone of the tires installed. These are off 2014 Unlimited Sahara... They are almost 2" larger in diameter and fit snugly in the tire weld. They also clear everything even in park mode if you have the quadra-air system. I think the wheels are actually a little farther out from the struts. I did not measure before pulling off the 20" wheels/tires. I I saw somewhere on a tire/speed calculator that the speedometer would be off about 4 MPH at 65 MPH.. Not for sure if going to be noticeable or not. The picture below is in park mode (lowest setting). When you are in off-road 2, the Jeep sets up in the sky...

That just makes the Jeep look right!
Now to find a set of those painted polar wheels.

Re: Changing Summit wheels with 18" Sahara wheels

agreed... that looks great and as I posted in your Summit Tow hook thread, there will be another 2014 Summit with 70th Anniversary wheel/tire combo in Houston. Soon

Nevermind

Re: Changing Summit wheels with 18" Sahara wheels

Any idea what the offset is of the sahara wheels?
I cannot find any information whatsoever regarding this topic.
I'd love to see it in OR2!

Re: Changing Summit wheels with 18" Sahara wheels

I could pull the spare out and measure it and compare with the factory 20". Are you wanting the offset for the wheel or tire?????

Re: Changing Summit wheels with 18" Sahara wheels

I am looking for the hub offset. I am back and forth if I just want to buy some sahara sized tires or want to get the takeoff wheels as well.
My goal is to get that 32" tire and bring the tire away from the upper control arm for tire chain fitment even if they can only be class s chains.
There are trails where at certain times I would not run w/o them. It's my only true disappointment with this rig so far.
I supposed wheel offset would be important too!

Re: Changing Summit wheels with 18" Sahara wheels

I will measure for you this morning. I am off today and will be in the shop this morning. I will snap a couple close up pictures in the wheel welds. It has been years since I used tire chains and maybe they are much tighter fitting now than 30 years ago. The 32" tires do fill up the weld and I don't think you would have issues with the upper control arm. There is plenty of room there. My concern would be in the weld. And with those cheap card board welds, I would be concerned about chains taking them out when they loosen up. The class s tire chain (not familiar) might work if they don't extend out further than say 1/2". I think some of the guys have went one size larger (33") in the GC. That would be too close for comfort for me....
