Goodyear Fortera's in the snow?

Hey guys, just picked up my new 2012 Jeep WK2 Laredo. It has the stock 17" wheels with Goodyear Fortera's on it. I live in New England where we do get a fair amount of snow and was wondering what people thought of their performance in snow/icy conditions?

I don't love the tread pattern, and they look a little to "Highway" for me. For reference, on my last SUV (non-jeep), I was running 265/75/16 Toyo Open Country AT's and they never let me down, and they looked pretty good too.

I'm going to run the 17's for my winter wheel setup and then step up to a set of 20's for the 2 weeks of summer we get around here!

Re: Goodyear Fortera's in the snow?

I live in the snowbelt in N.E Ohio and we get a fair amount of snow. I have the GY fortera's on my 09 4.7 QD2 and they are just ok in the snow. They dont feel stable while driving down the road in deep snow. I will get Dest a/t's probably before they need replaced. I ran dest at's on my 99 4.7 QD and they were awesome in the snow. I have never driven a WK2 yet so I dont how it would compare stock vs stock in the snow to my 09 WK.

Re: Goodyear Fortera's in the snow?

Good question. I live around Chicago and am leaning towards a dedicated winter tire. Probably the Bridgestone Blizzaks.

Should also add...I'm thinking of sticking with the stock 20" wheel.

Re: Goodyear Fortera's in the snow?

Agree the Fortera's are only OK in the snow. My winter set is 18" Firestone Dest AT's and they handle the High Alpine CO snow very well. The Toyo's Open Country are very solid snow sneakers as well, as I understand it they are similar to the Terra Grapplers.

Not sure the Firestones are available in a 20", but the Bridgestone Blizzaks are, and in general they are the best for snow and ice.

Re: Goodyear Fortera's in the snow?

I just got back from my tire dealer and they say the Open Country's are in short supply this year. He's going to try to get a couple of different sizes and see what will fit, but it may take a while.

I posted a question in the WK2 forum trying to figure out what the biggest tire I could get on a stock 17" rim, base 2012 Laredo. If anyone knows, I would appreciate it.

Re: Goodyear Fortera's in the snow?

Thanks for the suggestion. I hear great things about the Destination AT's, but I don't love the tread design. I'd rather have something a little "blockier" like the Open Country design.

I do like the Nitto Terra Grappler's. If I can find someone around here that is willing to mount a 265/65/17 to one of my wheels and see if it will fit on the front:

Hey, I just saw this part of the post, missed it the first time.

I'm looking for a 17" AT for the winter right now. Next spring I'll look for a set of 20's but not necessarily an AT tire.

I had them on my truck for almost 3years and they were excellent tires in the snow/ice/rain. Never once did i have an issue with them. Handled the blizzards we had here with no problem. You will be perfectly fine with them until you decide about upgrading to different tires.

Thanks, I swapped them out for some 265/65/17 Toyo Open Country AT's last weekend. I wanted a little wider tire, but wasn't sure if it would fit. Here's the post: Biggest 17" tires on stock wheels?

I just like the look of the Toyo's better, knew how well they performed, and wanted to get the Goodyears off while they were still basically brand new. They have been sold (or are in the process of being sold) on ebay right now, as long as the winning bidder pays for them. Someone is getting a good deal.
