Plasti Dip Issues?

I recently plasti dipped the stock wheels on my 07 Liberty, and I am having an issue...Basically, the paint is peeling from the top of the rim, right at the tire, so there is a silver rim that the plasti dip is coming off of.

I removed the wheels when dipping them, and cleaned them really good before I started, don't know what I could have done wrong. Can I just hit these areas with a touch up?

Yes you can touch up the spots. The area might have had a bit of dirt or something. They make plastidip glossifier which is basically a clear coat if would like a gloss finish and it might hold up to elements a bit better

Re: Plasti Dip Issues?

Awesome, I will give them a touchup and see...What was confusing for me, is ALL the videos I watched online show people just pulling the overspray off the tires once it has dried, and it looks like it "magically" (haha) just cuts away from the tire and rim. Mine did not do that. I applied 3-4 coats on them, maybe I need to apply a few more/make it thicker? (I only went through 2.5 cans which was surprising in itself).

Re: Plasti Dip Issues?

You have to use an exacto knife to actually cut the plastidip around the rim/tire and it will just peel off.

Re: Plasti Dip Issues?

They have a specific cleaner designed to prep the surface before spraying.
Of course you need to make sure that all residue of any cleaner is gone and dried before spraying.

Im thinking about getting some glossifier myself. Kind of over the whole "matte" look. Plus with the glossifier my wheels would be easier to clean. Im just so impatient and dont feel like waiting for it to come in the mail. Only plastidip product i can find in stores is the matte black color at Lowes.

Re: Plasti Dip Issues?

There is a youtube video that shows how to repair it. Thought they first softened the edges with thinners or something similar before reapplying. Otherwise it will always show.

Just found it:
