Will 17” wheels ride better than 18”?

I want to improve the ride quality of my 2017 Summit with 20” wheels. It rides more harshly than my 2011 Overland with 18’s, so I’m thinking of replacing the 20’s with 17 or 18 wheels. This should improve both ride and off-road performance. Will 17” wheels be noticeably better than 18”? Any wheel/tire recommendations? Will Wrangler 17" be a direct bolt on?

Re: Will 17” wheels ride better than 18”?

...And I am thinking of moving from stock 18s to 20 for smoother highway riding. Wife has 20s on her overland, which is all I have to compare it to.

Re: Will 17” wheels ride better than 18”?

This is a tough question. Theoretically, more sidewall should improve ride quality and off-road performance. I went from stock Wrangler wheels (265/70/17 KO2's) to 20" spider monkeys and 275/55/20 Duratracs. My OD is almost the same, but I gave up 3" of sidewall for daily driving. I'll be keeping the wheels and selling the tires for an MT for wheeling/camping setup.

Re: Will 17” wheels ride better than 18”?

Just remember, the 2nd number is the aspect ratio not the sidewall height, so it'll be a percentage of the section width of the tire....that number being larger doesn't always equate to a larger/taller sidewall.

Re: Will 17” wheels ride better than 18”?

Well since no one has actually come out and directly answered the question. I'm going to say, no, I don't think the 17's will "be noticeably better" than the 18's.
In theory, yes they should be slightly less harsh over bumps and imperfections in the road. Also, yes, they'll be noticeably better than 20's (regarding smoothness, not cornering). However, the minor difference between the 17 and 18 isn't likely to make such a difference that you'll feel it.
I've taken 20's off multiple trucks (and my Jeep) and put 17's or 18's on in place of them. I've always noticed an improvement in softness of the ride, and off road grip. Keep in mind though that doing so makes cornering at higher speeds feel much less stable, and depending on the rim and tire combo can feel a little loose at freeway speeds. You gain some comfort and off road grip, but you trade that for the performance of the lower profile tire. Just something to consider.

I'm thankful for your careful reply. My Overland had 18's so I'm ok with that level of on-road handling, plus they might be easier to find used.

Re: Will 17” wheels ride better than 18”?

Will a 17 inch wheel even fit and clear the brakes on a 17 Summit?
