05' 4.7 Limited Dead Transmission

My brother's 545RFE tranny is failing to cooperate. Shifts into every gear, but will not apply any power, not even a lug or engine pull. It will roll, as if it were in neutral, in every gear except park. I made sure the T-case wasn't in neutral numerous times. My first guess is the entire electronic shifter assembly is bad. After doing some online research, there are cases where the trans fluid return filter has gone bad or is plugged up and simply needs replacing. I'm just assuming that he hasn't ever serviced the trans & he is at 180K. Coincidentally, my brother had to go on vacation and left his WK in front of my house. Any takers on this one?

Re: 05' 4.7 Limited Dead Transmission

When did the problem happen? was it just not working one morning? Typically even with a split filter it will eventually grab and start functioning, your just dealing with a delayed initial engagement.

there could be a couple things but the fact it doesnt do anything in any gear position I would start with fluid level then drop the pan and inspect from there, if its pretty clean and not burnt up or loaded with metal flake inspect the filters.

Yep, just happened one morning. His wife went to back down their driveway & just coasted into the street. Fluid level checked out on the dipstick. He'll probably get it towed to the dealer once he gets back.

Sounds like it may be a solenoid that has gone bad. Could also have clogged filters or pickup screen on the pickup tube. I would do a full tranny service. Does the tranny fluid smell burnt?

Re: 05' 4.7 Limited Dead Transmission

If you are lucky, it split the filter. An easy check for this is to add 3 or 4 quarts of fluid. By overfilling it, the filter stops sucking air. If it doesn't move after that, it's not a split filter.

FYI... He took it to a trans shop & it was diagnosed with a bad trans pump, requiring a complete $2800 rebuild. Still in under the knife. Keep up with those maintenance schedules.
