05 4.7L V8 Engine Dead: Replacement Advice

Hey All,

So my engine is dead. And the cost is going to be around 5-6000 dollars to rebuild my engine.

Now I'm looking into replacing it with the 2nd GEN 4.7L that came out with the 2008 model. The transmission is the same so the increased HP and Torque shouldn't be an issue.

I'm wondering if there would be any computer issues? Any one have any advice.

Re: 05 4.7L V8 Engine Dead: Replacement Advice

I am not sure of all the changes but I would imagine it would be a HUGE headache. I am sure there is some tuning differences to take advantage of the differences in the motor, I am sure there are harness differences, different coil packs, the gen 2 4.7 i believe is fly by wire and so i would guess there are going to be some intake manifold differences... alot of this is speculation, it may not be all accurate, but what is 100% for sure its NOT going to be a drop it in, plug it in and drive it like it was made for it.

What happened to the motor?

Haha upon further inspection I'm thinking of socalmoparwk, similar user names. My b! But like he said, in no way is it a simple drop in

Pretty aware it's not a simple drop in...looking for someone who knows the differences between the two engines.

Good attitude towards people that try to help. If your gonna come here and ask for help don't get pissy when someone gives you an answer you don't like. 2005jgc knows everything there is to know about these jeeps. Work on that attitude or no one is gonna want to help you, douch bag

I wasn't talking to him...or making a reference to people here. And it seems you were the one who was like that first....assuming I'm the Viper engine guy.

Not sure whats crawled under your skin.

Re: 05 4.7L V8 Engine Dead: Replacement Advice

ok so anyway......

if the motor blew, is it under warranty, or insured? Have you talked to your dealer? Some dealerships can actually be pretty cool if you try to have a nice chat with the service manager. It might cost a little more, but if the insurance is paying for it, get the dealer to do the swap.

if not, then let's see if anyone with some good mechanical knowledge gets a look at this thread.

no need to poo poo the idea of an engine swap. Socal here isn't the first person with the idea, and definitely not the last. Also.... is name calling really necessary? Let's make this post the end of that part of this conversation.

They are physically the same so the swap isn't that big of a deal. I assume you have the 4 plug NGC pcm so that shouldn't be an issue. if it's throttle by write you can install one of Airram.com throttle body adaptor on the intake and put on your older style throttle body.

Crest...not sure what got under your skin. I wasn't knocking anyone here. Perhaps you misunderstood what I actually meant. I think you calling me a d-bag is way out of line. Thanks for your help.

Too 2005....I didn't mean to offend....any advice is welcome.

SCJEEP....what is a 4 PLUG NGC PCM? Thanks for the helpful info.

Thank you for for the kind words but there is also alot I dont know, I work on factory vehicles, I dont modify them to this extreme. To be quite honest, I dont know what the aftermarket has available to circumvent chryslers modules and what they are looking for. All I know is that there are a number of VERY important modules that have the vin written to them, and because of the vin its looking for specific signals from specific sensors... This is what I dont know about the aftermarket, I dont know how they get around this, I would IMAGINE it would require a brand new pcm programmed to the new motor (as at least chrysler scantools wont overwrite pcm data with a completely different drivetrain configuration) but it may require ALL vin written modules are replaced and programmed... Im just not sure.

Im going to have to agree, socalmopar instantly came to my mind, he is a guy that has alot done to his vehicle and its mostly exactly what he wants, but he has talked big in the past about having a viper motor installed. Nothing personal, he just took ya for the wrong person.

I understand your looking for exact differences, thus the reason I didnt bother responding again, no offence taken.

Also chrysler has changed pcms through the years, I dont know of anything that doesnt use an NGC pcm right now other than like the compass/patriot with the 2.4l engine. Your pcm is mounted to the inner fender between the coolant reserviore and the firewall, if there is 4 connectors in the face of it, that is what he is refering to.
