Re: 05 Limited GC 5.7 Hemi starting problem

Go to advance auto have them check the battery first then go from there. I had to get starter replaced at 20k under warranty and they put in a new battery too and free tow to the dealership.

If you get a free battery test first, it will localize the problem. Terminal voltage may appear normal with a voltmeter, but the capacity may be deficient. Battery cells sulfate after time and may intermittently short. A Battery Capacity Test will tell you that answer. Make sure that whoever does it for you knows what he/she is doing.

The starter is powered up through the PCM. If there is insufficient battery capacity, it may appear to be the starter.
You may find that, in fact, the starter motor is going bad, but I recommend you eliminate the other possibilities first with the no-cost tests. Also, check the solenoid connection for corrosion first (disconnect battery negative lead).

Finally, I was unaware that the starter solenoid is available separately. Thought the starter /starter solenoid are changed as a unit.

Let us know what you find.

Re: 05 Limited GC 5.7 Hemi starting problem

This is a common issue and more often than not it's a yellow ground wire on the starter that corrodes and makes intermittent contact. Do a google search for WK starter issues. Other thing it could be is the ignition switch.

Re: 05 Limited GC 5.7 Hemi starting problem

lol tosh beat me to it. I have an 05 and had the exact same issue at 31K. Would turn it to start nothing happen, let the spring put it back to ON then i'd try it again and viola(in the on position everything worked/turned on just fine). Would randomly do it every few days. I ended up pulling off the wire and cleaning the end, which was fairly corroded and haven't had the problem since(granted its only been 2 months).

Unless it turns over very slowly or you experience dimming light when starting its not the battery. Tosh mentioned the 2 most common fixes for the issue you/I had with randomly not starting.

Do you have any step by step on how to replace the starter? I never had an issue with this at all until today when I went to start it and got one Click only!! Thought it was the battery first and got a boost, but no change. Started reading and found out that this was the issue with the starter. Also how would I test the sylinoid? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks so much.
