05 transmission gremlins

I have the 05 4.7
Lately the tranny is kicking into limp mode (3rd gear) randomly. I have read codes and get po870 and po700. I looked up the code and it seems to have something to do with pressure of fluid. Fluid is full and fresh. Thing is i can shut the engine off..just for a sec and start back up and its fine...sometimes for days. I took it to a tranny shop...test drove it and they told me its most likley electrical. They failed to find anything mechanical wrong.
I basically am hoping someone hear can help me out so i dont have to pay for a electrical fishing expedition. I am comfrotable doing mech work....i just dont know where to start.
I had this problem before and it went away...its back and i have not had anything done to the vehicle.

ok, having read through the common issues list here i have tried a couple of things.
i added some tranny fluid, very little. no result.
i contacted the dealer and had them check my vin, all flashes are up to date.

i had a couple of days to observe what triggers it. i notice that while the engine/tranny is cold it happens more often. i can shut the engine off and on and there is no change. i also found that if i go for a longer trip and get the engine/tranny up to temp then shut off and back on the problem is gone. the tranny stays in drive, and no check lights.

i hope that this may sound familiar to what others have experienced and maybe be able to point me in a direction. at this point i am taking it to the dealer next monday to have the run test. i am leaning towards a solenoid in the tranny right now. i am thinking that because of the fact that the tranny is happy at operating temps and maybe the solenoid is sticking when the tranny is cool.

at this point any help is appreciated. i am not familiar with these jeeps at all. i am able to turn a wrench, but i dont like shooting in the dark and throwing parts blindly.

look into cleaning the module that is operated by moving the gear selector. it is located underneath the plastic covering where the gear selector is located ill look for it but my internet connection is crap tonite

try reading a few of these especially the ones that give you a how to on cleaning the shift module, it might not be youre issue now but it will be eventually, looks like it might be a pain but at least you can cross it off youre list

make sure you read all the pages here, on the second page there is a tutorial on how to remove the shifter

Not familiar with the WK, but do know the 5-45RFE. P0870 = OD clutch pressure switch signal not in desired state. When engine rpm goes over 1000, the TCM will apply pressure to all clutches for a moment and checks if the related pressure switches are in the desired positions. If two times the pressure switch doesn't give the desired signal, the transmission goes into limp mode and the fault code is set. There are 5 pressure switches inside the TRS/solenoid block inside the tranny. I would start cleaning the big connector on the left side of the tranny and try again. But it could be a problem with the pressure switch itself. New solenoid block cost around 300 USD. There is eventual a solenoid block repair kit available with new diaphragmas for the pressure switches. I bought this at: Automotive Transmission Electronics Specialists . They work with OEM equipment for a nice price.

Mopar 45RFE Solenoid Block - Oem New ! Save Here ! !
Yes, this is the TRS/solenoid block for your 5-45RFE transmission. This assy already has the gasket installed on it and can easily be swapped out, however you need to remove the valve body first. When i ordered the gasket alone, it came with the solenoid block repair kit, which included the pressure switch membranes, springs and some other O-rings.
But try cleaning the large connector on the left side of the transmission first, bad contact due to corrosion, moisture or dirt could already generate your problem.

i found the large connector on the drivers side. i had to undo the shift linkage to get to it.
i checked it out...looks clean. i gave it a shot of elec cleaner as well. the limp mode came back after a short test drive.

with that part i linked do i need to buy any thing else when dropping the valve body?
i just did a fluid and filter change about a week ago so i am planning on reusing those and what i dont spill.

The solenoid block is complete with gasket and seal on the connector. So you will only need RTV (or a prefab gasket if you prefer, but more prone to leaks) for the tranny pan. Removal and installation of the valve body needs to be done in Park position. On the outside you only have to remove the large connector plug. On the inside, after the pan is removed, you need to remove the oval inlet filter and then loosen the 6 bolts which hold the valve body in place. Remove 4 bolts completely and leave 2 hand tight. The valve body/ solenoid assy is a bit heavy and you are not in the best position laying under the jeep to hold it in place for extended period of time. The assy is quite fulnerable, so don't let it drop. Have some plastic pan at hand, so that you can put the valve body in there. Still some fluid is in the valve body and can/will come out when rotating the assy. You can now remove the solenoid block from the valve body by taking out the screws. You can see looking at the size of the block which screws to remove. When installing there are 2 screws which should be installed first, there holes are marked with a small triangle. When putting the valve body back in, check the tower seals which seal of between the valve body and the clutches for damage. Check if the fork from the TRS selector plate fits the shift lever pin in the tranny before fastening the 6 valve body bolts.

Oh, and i almost forgot the most important thing, work clean. There are many small orifices in the transmission and dirt/dust/sand particles can easily block off such orifice and cause all kind of strange behaviour. I'm not sure on your model year, but on earlier years the accumulator piston cover plate bolts could become loose or even break. Also wear on the inner side of this plate, caused by the accumulator springs, was common. But it can be that on your model already a modified plate is installed.
Did you ever think at installing a shiftkit? This would be the opportunity .

Sounds like my 05 tranny issues. Same codes and same symptoms. Unfortunately I had to have a rebuild. Almost $3K to get it done.
